Is this tank big enough for this stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Build your "future tank" first then worry about the stocking after. Do some research on your own too vs relying on everyone elses opinions on mfk.

My current stock in that tank is 3 jacks and 2 oscars none are over 5" I do weekly water changes and my tank is always clean. I also have 2 plecos and one is like 8" and the other is like 4". I just got a 2"-3" pair of convicts. I'm starting to build the tank soon. The fish have another 5 months til they outgrow the tank. It will be done by then.

Actually no you don't have 5 months, one Oscar by itself will outgrow the tank in 5 months. You have 2 of them plus 3 JDs so with the amount of waste and hormones being produced, they will be stunted long before that
5 months are up. A more experienced keep might be able to get it to work for that long but you being new to the hobby more than likely don't know how to curb it. Also aggression is gonna be a big issue shortly. I don't mean to disparage you but you should really lighten your stock until you do have the tank up and running.

Your fish are producing hormones. As they build up in the tank they tell the body to stop growing which is what causes stunting. Stunted fish not only don't look attractive, they have shorten life spans. The two main reasons you change your water periodically is to remove nitrates and the hormones. In smaller tanks it builds up faster.

Assume an Oscar is 3". In a healthy environment, in 5 months I would expect it to reach 7-8" at least. Now you have two if them, so that twice the amount of hormones and on top of that you have three Jack Dempseys also producing hormones. Unless you are doing frequent water changes and increasingly larger changes over time, you fish will be stunted long before you upgrade your tank.

This is correct.

To whoever said pbass have large mouths and such that's why they're called large mouth bass... They are not actually a bass... They are a cichlid lol
