Anyone NOT use water conditioner/prime ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I once ran out of prime didn't realize until I finished the water change and a week later I lost a healthy fat tiger just like that

I even ran out to the store after and got some but it was possible that the few hours of chlorine exposure did something to that ray. After wards my flower stressed him enough he just went belly up.fat and all

I always use conditioner now. I once did a water change on my pleco tank and forgot I had run out of prime. When I was done I lost 4 plecos almost immediately. Watching them swim erradically and die was very hard. I was lucky my 7 year old goldie survived.

Learn from other peoples mishaps! The levels of chlorine will vary season to season, why risk it? My fish mean too much too me to skimp on dechlor. Im assuming the ppl that skimp on dechlor also skimp on regular wc and cleaning as well.

All comes down to your water conditions right out of the tap. Some people have better water than others. All areas are different so consult local people for best information gathering.

Toby- I think you missed the first half of my post. I fill 50 gallon barrels and leave for 24 hours before doing the water change.

No, I wasn't talking about you....that's why I said if you have chlorine and did nothing to get rid of it, I was meaning people who do not gas it off. Sorry for the misunderstanding, what you do is perfect.

We don't even have prime here.. and I've seen some other water conditioners do more bad than good.

I have about 800 gallons to do water changes on weekly and using a 300 gallon holding tank w prime and aeration maybe I'm just over cautious but I wouldn't even ever put straight tap water in my fish tanks first without prior mixing it w prime

Chlorine is not really that bad it usually gases out in 24-48 hours. Also depends on the concentration to burn fish. Of course inverts would be more sensitive. It is all the other stuff you have to worry about. If you got pretty clean water you can get away with not using conditioners IMO.

A friend of mine just drops water in straight from the tap - before he never even had a mixed and dropped pure cold from the hose pipe, now he does have a mixer so the temperature swing is nothing but he certainly doesn't prime.

He has had rays, nothing to the value you are referring to and if he did then i'd imagine he would just pay for the prime but none the less he's kept a fair amount of money in there and still stuck to his ways.

Alright bones!!!

U know I used to always use a bit of hot from the tap mixer when filling up during water changes to achieve desired tank temp instantly ...but then was told of dangerous metals in the hot water cylinder .... Especially old boilers.
So now I just fill with cold . And only use a bit of hot if I do 50% wc , so temp does not swing beyond 4 - 5 degrees
