Is a air pump absolutely necessary???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my experience is the opposite. I've never had a filter quit working. become very loud and annoying, yes. but die? never.
air pumps on the other hand... at least 4 off the top of my head.

Hello; Yes I have replaced several air pumps over the years. I was not very clear. They rarley failed suddenly, usually gradually lost pumping power. A better way to say it would have been to say the bubblers do not fail, but the air pumps do need to be replaced from time to time. I will say that the current air pumps seem to last much longer than those of many years ago. Of course i ran them much harder back then as most of my filters were air powered for many years. The first power filters that I could afford were not nearly as reliable as todays stuff.
I also include the possibly somewhat dated HOB filters that would lose prime. Some would lose prime every time the power went off and had to be restarted. The HOB's I currently use do not have this problem. I have many times in the past found a HOB not pumping water after having lost prime and the bubblers bubbling along and helping to keep my fish alive.
To each his/her own. In the end we grt to run our tanks any way we want.

It's age related. I got my first tank back in the 60's. To this day, I have to know that every tank can be aerated with bubblers, or there's a sense of impending doom. no matter how much circulation there is.
Enough bubbles can raise the dead.
;-)

Air pumps never die, they get passed down through the family because it's evil to throw them away.
LOL.

Always will keep a small airstone. I know the bubbles do not put o2 in the water but the breaking of the surface of the water do. Try running your tank with bubbler and with out and see if like me the fish seem to move around more with a bubbler. Just my 2 cents.

Usually true.
It might not be 'neccessary', but kids run through sprinklers and fish play in bubbles. sometimes I run them just to see that.
