Cuban/Tropical Gar care specifics.

Thanks Solomon I was hoping you'd chime in on this. Now seeing that gars work with other gars best from what all of you have said, what if I used the money I made to get the PBB and instead I got the Cuban AND the Tropical Gar to go along with the Ornate Bichir and the Endlicheri I already have and just make it those 4 for now and if another nice gar comes up somewhere along the line add it in... (not a gator gar). Could an 8-10 inch Tropical gar go in with a 6-7 inch Cuban?

I certainly would go with both if you're fine with that. The gars should be fine as long as they're similar in size, so it would be best to get a tropical gar on the small end of that range & a Cuban gar on the large end of that range; they might be fine if there's a few inches difference (maybe 3"), but it's always best to play it safe.

Also I'm trying to get a gauge here on something; is the difference in aggressiveness between Cuban Gars and Florida gars more like the difference between a Jardini and a silver arowana or more like an African Lungfish and a South American Lungfish?

Neither of those comparisons are good comparisons as both jardini arowanas & African lungfishes shouldn't have any tankmates while Cuban gars can have some tankmates.

he's talking about the relative difference in aggression in his comparison, not the actual aggression of those fishes. i'd say the difference in CBG vs FLG is more along the lines of a senegalus bichir (FLG) to an ornate bichir or congicus bichir (CBG). they can both be kept with tankmates, but the CBG can have some unpredictable moments if not well-fed and tankmates aren't at least somewhat close in size (length). although they can get aggressive, i have never had a CBG kill another gar like i have with a gator or croc gar.

as for size issues, as ryan had posted, go with the smaller spectrum of TPG and larger spectrum of CBG if you can (assuming the former is bigger than the latter). you don't want too much difference as a TPG is still an Atractosteus gar and can take down a smaller gar if it wants to (keep them well fed and you shouldn't have to worry about it at those sizes). good luck--

Dont want to start a new thread since I have pretty much the same question, but the other way, my CBG is smaller. CBG is about 30 cm and my TPG is about 40 cm. Will this be a problem?
They are not in the same take right now, but as soon as my big tank is ready they will both be in that one.

that's a relatively negligible size difference at that stage of development...i would say the fishes should be fine together. pics would help for comparison, just to make sure though--

PS-- keep them well fed and you shouldn't have any problems between the two fishes.
