Did any of you guys ever get sidetracked with fishkeeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hate to say it, but we told you so...

Life happens and people change their minds... Just be glad that you didnt already build that large tank you wanted... Coz i have a feeling another year or two and you may not even be into fish any more...

I too thought he was building a large tank... good thing he didnt.

my tanks r my stress release. bad day? stare at tank

Oh, I thought this was going to be a thread about being late to work or school because of fishkeeping. Maybe the thread title should be changed to 'Distracted FROM Fishkeeping'. ;)

Balancing your passion with responsibilities is the name of the game when you're an adult. I am going to have to think long and hard about my 300 gallon once kids start entering the picture a year and a half from now. There's no substitute for good planning!

Well I for one think its good that you are making the mature decision to thin out your tanks. Some people who run out of time for the hobby just let their tanks go down hill and then when all their fish die you find the tanks on CL. I applaud you for your honesty, and when your life settles down I will gladly welcome you back to MFK. Hopefully you have learned alot from your short time here and next time you still take your time and not rush into things.

Good luck sir!

It can be done pretty easily with good planning as you said. auto drip water change system, 'lower' maintenance fish and you're good to go. As much as we like to relax and look at the tanks, kids do too. My son will fall asleep in my lap watching the tank!

I have never been 'sidetracked'...

I decided maintaining 3 tanks was too much, so I cut it to one. Its was definately NOT because of other interests. It was becoming more and more impractical because of money, college and lack of time. The tank I have now is in no way easy to maintain, but is certainly easier than three, especially larger ones.

I think it's important to know your limitations. Three tanks (for the time being) was mine.

Fail to spare time for your fish, they fail to live...

Heatherbeast: Kids and tanks are easy to juggle, I mess with my tanks during naptime or after bedtime. And my son even sleeps in my room! lol The falling water from the filters actually helps him sleep, and he LOVES the fish as much, if not more than I do. He just woke up, sat bolt upright, pointed at the 10 gal I just threw together for him about an hour ago, then flopped back over and went back to sleep! His favorite fish is the 16" clown knife though, he adores her.

Never. There are times where I don't want to clean them out but the feeling of having them is still the same as the day I got them. I don't see that fading anytime soon and am actually working on several more projects..

I'm guessing the novelty has worn off. Fishkeeping is a fun hobby but takes work & dedication for the lifespan of the fish you keep. Good luck on fishkeeping in the future though.

buy the tank now!... lol like said before, just maintaining isnt hard... its all the projects us addicts have going. atm we juggle 7 tanks, a horse, and a cat. not to mention a 7 month old... we had to put back an upgrade for our gar for almost a year. get to a happy spot... just know adding after kids isnt easy... btw 1 of our tanks was set up specifically for the nursery... our daughter loves her guppies, clown loaches, and starry night eel. nothing more satisfying for me as a fishkeeper seeing her squeel, and grab at the tank in delight when we feed her fish. her dad was skeptical about the tank at first...
