"The laws in place have zero to do with people who like to keep native fish that grow large and want to have a proper environment for them. "
WRONG

You have to understand that the laws put into place are to protect our native wildlife. If you want to remove a species from the wild to grow in an aquarium you HAVE to follow the laws, or serve jail time and get fined. Follow the rules or there is no place in you for native fish keeping, other wise its called poaching.

On a side note, you might want to use that 500 gallon you plan to build, for your fish in your other aquarium instead of a northern pike -->

I will be getting rid of the fish I currently have in my tank in one years time as I always do. There are circumstances when I can't make myself get rid of a fish so in those cases I get a bigger tank. i feel its good to switch it up. The Pike would be a fish of my fathers and mine and i would be splitting the costs and buying a 500 gallon not building. I already said I'll be sure to get a permit idk what the big deal is?

I apologise for getting in depth about the permit but you didn't really acknowledge that you'd get one or show understanding about the permit from my point of view at the time.

Best to my knowledge, northern pike begin there lives in warmer water environments, and need cooler water as they grow. they could almost be classified as coldwater fish when larger (7 or 8 lbs or more). this is the reason behind small, shallow lakes taht are full of "hammer handle" pike, that CANNOT grow large, or live as long as they otherwise could. this said, i believe you would need water that is no more than low 60's once this fish is several years old, elsewise it will not experience proper growth. just my thought's and something else to think about. good luck if you give it a go!!

hey im new here just come a cross this post, ive kept northern pike now for a few years and had great success and pleasure from them, ive had all my pike in a very Large outdoor pond my biggest at the minute is 20 inches (female) just ready for spawning ive got a smaller pond with last years fry in now and they are all around 6-8 inches now, and growning rapidly! ive never kept them in a fish tank but im sure if you got a big enough tank and good filter system im sure it would be interesting!

Thank you for the info man... what do you feed them? Or do they just eat naturally in the pond?

no problem :) ive being feeding them on carp, roach, perch, rudd and bream whatever i stock into their pond really, the pond is a big one so its hard to watch them feed and stuff, the biggest pike in there at the minute is around 20 inches long and weights around 6-7lb. But the pike fry ive had in the small 1000 pond are fantastic they grow rapidly and eat everything i throw into them, they soon create a bond are are waiting for me everyday at feeding time which is pretty cool, but as soon as they reach over the 12 inch size i either sell them on or re-stock them in my larger pike pond :)

so to have a northern to live captive, does a tank need water filtration or no? fill me in on all the details guys. i've caught so many around where i live and i wanna keep one of the smaller ones. i have a 2000 gallon shark tank sitting empty that'd be a perfect home.

If you have to ask whether a fish needs filtration....you are in no place to be keeping a fish like pike. Start doing some research, or things will only end badly.
