GATF Mom Introduction...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's not eating OMG! I'm freaking out. He's had 5 small feeders in there all day and he starts to go after them and then gives up when he gets close. As far as him being skittish and stuff, I have one plant and a life sized human skull (not sharp :-)) in with him. He is OK as long as I move slow with anything actually inside the tank.

Anyways... any suggestions to get him eating? The water temp is a solid 83 and has been since I got him... I gave him plenty of privacy while I was work today including turning the Hood lamp off... just wait it out? I've heard of other GATFs not eating unless there is a good chase involved...

Mind over matter... I don't mind, so it don't matter.

My 6" gatf eats like a pig for a few days then sort of fasts for a day or two, goes for the food then turns away right at the last second. Does that a few times then loses interest. He just recovered from a case of finrot also.
He was in a 75g and recently up'd him to a 180g and got sick right after the move

When i got mine it didnt eat eat for 5 days straight. And then my gator gar bit it bad a few times, moved the poor guy to a quarantine tank. Treated it with furan and melafix, started eating after 2 weeks. Now its in a seperate tank and has started to take food stick. Let it vast for weeks bro, its okay i guarantee you.. From my experience goliath is not a voracious eater, i find vittatus and forskalii are more of a eater. My vit and forskalii eat 5 times a day, pellets and live. Good luck!

i'd say i wouldnt hit the panic button yet, they are finicky ... most predators can go a while without eating, but he is thin so you def want him eating soon ... There is a possibility his teeth are coming out and new ones are coming in, and they are less likely to eat during that time, however that usually only takes 2-3 days ... i'd stick with live to get some food in his belly, and if he's chasing thats a great sign cause it means he knows what to do, and the instinct is there so i'd say its just a matter of time. I'd possibly try roseys, since they are smaller, and sometimes if feeders are in the tank too long, they may be looked at as tankmattes rather than food so i'd drop 1 rosey in tonight and see what happens

Thanks for the advice. I have three very small comet gf in there now. I'm going to call the guy I got him from today and see what he was feeding him. He was still chasing them around this morning so I'm hoping he snags one while I'm at work. I just love him, and I want him to put some weight on. I was thinking the stress of the move might have something to do with it. Anyways, thanks again for all the insight. I will keep you updated!

Mine tends to gorge himself then fast for a few days. I haven't felt comfortable honestly trying to get him off of live yet, but I do try to throw bloodworms, krill and pellets in the tank before I give him feeders. He shows interest but hasn't taken any yet. He's about 5" right now, but I want him 6-7" and fattened up some before I start trying to wean him.

I was getting somewhat concerned though because until yesterday, it was five days since he had eaten last. Then I noticed that my 5" GATF was swollen up like a balloon and my 3.5" bala shark dither was missing. Sorta expensive feeder, but at least he ate a good meal! :D
