What do you do with your fish when you get bored with them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't get rid of fish because I get bored.. but i have gotten rid of incompatable fish.. or fish that out grew what I was able to provide at the time. Its not a non-chalant thing... usually I do cry like a baby.

The only fish I had to give up were some mollies, I just gave them away to people I knew that ha established tanks. I got tired of the fishies relatively short lifespan, plus I wanted to go bigger. :D

I had to rehome an african featherfin, do to him 'accidently' poking my largest BP. After that all of my fish were terrified of the catfish. Shame, he was beautiful but I couldn't have my overexcited BPs smashing him all the time. He has a good home now with some gouramis.

I would never dump a fish in a lake or canal. We have too much of that **** going on here in south Florida. We have plecostomus lining the banks here.. wonder how those got there?

Hello; This thread has given a fairly decent glimpse of the range of member's moral compass. It may be useful in assesing future comments about the well being of pets under our care. This is an opinion question in the end. For some simple boredom is ample reason for disposing of a living thing. Re-homing is apparently not the most drastic method of getting rid of a pet. Somewhat mild when compared to a few suggestions. Go figgure?

I see nothing wrong with rehoming fish.... if you want to try something new or get bored with a fish.... assuming that you make sure they go to a good home and someone who will enjoy them.... whats the harm in that?

this is a hobby, if you are not enjoying your current stock or tank why not change it up? I do it regularly.... get fish grow them out watch them grow etc and then move on to something else...

This is my problem. I don't get bored if my fish, but I do get interested in other fish. This makes me buy more tanks! Lol
On the other hand, in regard to rehoming a fish, I don't really see anything wrong with it if the fish is going to somebody that you KNOW will care for it properly.

In the twelve years I've been keeping fish I've only gotten rid of two fish. I left the country for a month and I didn't think my moral eel and Colombian shark would survive with my mom's friend looking after the tanks. I decided it was best for their survival. I try to do extensive research before buying any fish so I can take care of it long term. I still have the first barb I bought to cycle a tank back in 2000!

The only reason why I've rehomed/sold off my fish is because they were incompatible with my current stock, never because I was bored. I have two close friends who are also into fishkeeping and most of the time I'm able to give them the fish rather then sell it. I also do extensive research before buying a fish but somehow I always buy the meanest one.. lol
