When they are out of business, enjoy the 45 min drive.

It wouldn't break my heart. I would venture a guess that 25% of the fish in that store die before they even get sold. They charge a fortune as well. 1" Oscars for $20, 1" EBJD for $53.

I prefer getting to know the store owners myself, and if they give me a discount its a bonus, if not then its all good too coz i get quality service and fish / products...

I get excellent treatment from the store 45 min away, and I agree about what you said. The store I made reference to originally carries rodents, cats, dogs, etc as well as fish. They know nothing about anything regarding fish. This includes the owner and the "fish manager". They couldn't even begin to explain the nitrogen cycle, fish compatibility, the fully grown size of anything, diet requirements, or much of anything for that matter. They carry pretty nice dog food for a decent price, but that's about all I can say that's positive about the store.

Don't steal from local business'. With the economy the way it is, be happy they are around. Remember what Wal-Mart did to neighborhood grocery stores.

Yeah, and PetSmart has done it to most of the independent pet shops in this town.

x2.. and there are a few stores around here i simply dont give my business too unless i have too. i drive over 30 mins and past about half a dozen stores to get to my favorite shop, they price honestly, treat me square... so many lfs try and take advantage of people its disgusting. i drive past the 2 biggest private shops in milwaukee to shop at a hole in the wall... friendly personable owners who always try and do right by you.

Which one is this? I've never checked out the shops in milwaukee, mostly cuz I live north of GB, but drive all over to check out fish stores. I love the two here in town, the two in GB, the one in Appleton, and one in Sheboygan. Some are a bit pricey but I try to support the local guys. Within my means of course.

I work at a chain pet store (dodges flying knives) but it comes with a lot of advantages, the discount is nice, customers bring in fish they don't want anymore and give them away for free, dibs on clearance items, etc. I'm fortunate enough to work in an area where the different fish shops stock different things so we can refer people to each others stores. Example: our store doesn't sell large cichlids so we direct them to a lfs that specializes in cichlids down the road, so they do the same for us if we have something they don't. I just brought home another fish today that someone didn't want anymore. I've never taken advantage in a way that I would screw the store over, or any other store. I have bought several mislabeled fish from other stores, but it doesn't hurt anyone since they didn't pay much for the fish to start with. :D

My best LFS always try to screw people over in anyway they can. I get sold dead feeders all the time and don't notice til I'm out in the car (no returns) but they have such a better selection than the chains near me. Also my little sister loves when I take her there to see his big tank with huge Pacus and catfish

I don't think the OP is robbing the store. He's just taking advantage of a deal. Don't tell me any of you hasn't haggled a price on something. My "Upright" christian mother wheels and deals at yardsales. she keeps the small bills in one pocket, and big bills in a back pocket, she sees something she likes, she tries to offer them half of the asking price out of her small bill pocket, pretending it's all she has. If the store is mislabeling, and asking a smaller price for something that's normally really expensive, I don't blame a person for jumping on that!
