How do "You" control nitrates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most people don’t... Nitrate is tolerable to most fish, with some notable exceptions. If you want very little nitrate, keep a very lightly stocked tank, change 100% of the water twice weekly, use pothos filtrations and use an algae net nitrate filter. Keep a flat substrate you can vacuum and filter heavily. It can be done. It just requires this little thing called work.

Also note, commercial “nitrate” filters are typically wastes of money. Buyer beware.

How can you change 100% of your water without your fish flopping around the bottom being stressed? Its not possible. Even if you do 2 50% wc back to back that wouldn't be a 100% wc. Further more doing a 100% wc would throw off the cycle.

Most people do manage their nitrate by routine WC. Nitrate is NOT tolerable by most fish. It cannot be eliminated completely but keeping it low is all we can do. 100% WC twice weekly...really?

I've seen several nitrate reactors at Marine Shows and spoke to researchers that created them. Many have extensive background in Marine Biology and have done work for public aquariums including SeaWorld. They actually single out certain bacterias and feed them with the polymer beads in the reactor. Analysis and data have proven to be effective.

24/7 drip, water outta the tap already registers 10-15ppm nitrates in my area, tank tests steady 10-15ppm nitrates with heavy feeding
