The idea that spanking is some how related to our current social decline is complete ____. The wanting be be your kids friend FIRST and Parents second is, also a rapidly growing sense of entitlement. My experience with kids and I get stuck with them often is, consistent parents raise reasonable kids. Any blatant favoritism also adds to the stupid. If ALL the kids are consistently spanked within reason, while not an optimal disciplinary tool it is effective. One of things I've also seen is that with spanking either illegal or frowned upon some parents just don't discipline at all. It's as if they know no other forms of punishment.

In response to but you don't have kids: Unless your kids ARE productive adult members of society you have no more justification for your view than I do. Your 14 yo A student doesn't count. Saw way too many of those unravel in college.

I got smacked a few times as a kid almost always out of their frustration and not anything I did. That didn't really have that much of an effect either way. What I resented then and still resent now is all the special treatment my brother got. By doing this and me always being wrong dad made life SO unpleasant at home that I left at 18. Kid brother is still living the life at home and had 20 times the spending money since all but groceries are paid. I pay my own every thing so I have way less for any fun. He takes European vacations my idea of a splurge is a few boxes of .308 for the range. Nothing I'd love more than to move back in with the parents so I can get my ZR1 with HUD and have tons of play money. We both work as engineers. Having a Fair Haired Golden sibling will have a far more profound effect than a few swats on the butt.

If you were qualified beyond just physically being able to reproduce you might be considered an adult. If you were able to debate using hard information instead of emotional blurts based on only your own limited personal experience you might be considered an adult.
I bet you have said to yourself more than once... ( upon witnessing some horrendous parenting, perhaps in your local walmart) " that person shouldn't have been allowed to have kids!"

I'll go back to my education ( and books) if you promise to read just one book every now and then.
:)

Please do go back to your education and books; in time you will realize that when someone comfortably put a complex topic in a single quote, he really does not know what he is talking about.

dude, when someone can comfortably dismiss one of the more profound idioms in psychology he really does not know what he is talking about, intellectually or educationally.
The meaning of the quote is one of the most discussed in the world of child psychology, It is highly complex in its implication, only appearing simple in its expression and its truth.
Jung and Skinner's discoveries also are important for understanding, you should read them, both could enlighten you if you have a genuine interest in child psychology.

I wish my parents would have beat the **** outta me for the stupid crap I did when i turned 18, they didn't and I got worse, eventually i grew up.

Theres a big difference between dicipline and abuse, if u cant understand then u shouldnt have kids.
