MY Big Very Old Red Devil........... Big, Bad and Old....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats awesome that you kept him that long. ... and still a good looking fish.

i rehomed my 2 midas at my LFS about 5 months ago because they were fitting in with my Cen Am community tank. 4 days ago i was at the LFS , they still have both of them. the male is HUGE. with a nice hump head. some white patches. ... almost makes me want to remove all my community in my 140 gallon and have a solo RD tank. almost. lol

well at least you get to see them...but hopefully they get a real home soon... just takes another monster fish keeper to come in and see them.. thats how i got my guy so long ago...

Congrats and well done, looks like lots of care went into keeping him.

Has there been threads showing the oldest/longest kept fish on MFK? (Just an idea if it has not)

There are many DEDICATED here.

start one and i will be there... thanks..

thanks i am sure he will look great as he ages... so many of them we wonder just how old is old... at least i am finding out...

Have you had any experiences with varying lifespans of cichlids based on what type it is? I've heard that beani and haitiensis have shorter lifespans (~10 years) than most amphilophus (~16 years).

no sorry i never kept them.... i had an african cichlid that lived to 16 years..and a black red tail shark actually turned gray in the face before he passed at 14 years... my arowana Maybelline is about 11 years old now..

Man you have some old fish. It'd be interesting to calculate out how many gallons of water you've changed for each fish over the years.

Ex:
If your RD is in the standard 75 gallon tank for a RD, and you do a 2/3 tank water change per week, that's 50 gallons of water per week. Multiply that by 12 years, and you have changed 31,200 gallons of water, or 260,520 pounds (130 tons) of water (assuming 8.35 pounds per gallon).

:nilly:

He is in a 75.. but nevermind him... all the 22 tanks set up together ... that went on for at least 10 years... now down to about 15 tanks..
