Hail damage. Right between the eyes.

Sorry to see you are still having issues Al and to you John for you loss of the Marble. But I have to disagree with you John on the fact that the issue is that it's because they are marbles and wild caught. I've had my pair of wild caught marbles for just under 3 years and its has been issue free. They have been housed with my three blackies for one and a half years during this period. I don't use any auto drip or anything fancy.
At least in Al's case I believe he is on the right track and it is stress within the breeding groups, if it was parasitic or bacterial it would be affecting the other species. JMO

stupid / borderline foolish

hey, ya know what...cool alan...they are your rays.
do or dont do whatever you want..
seems like you have indeed gotten way over your head...
you dont want to take my first advice..well..here is my second..
sell some of your rays to people that can take better care for them..shut some tanks down and put the money back into your filter system....
Keep the tanks up and running that you can afford on your budget so you can properly take care of your rays.

maybe my first advice is indeed stupid or even foolish...but i know this..if i was dealing with the crap you are dealing with i would cover all my bases no matter how slim the chance...
but...thats just me...

you didnt post anything in my 125.
also..your "underlined" of what i was saying ...i was only agreeing with him as to what he said earlier.
i am not kicking anyone.
simple fact is this.....if its not bacteria or a parasite then its stress...and if its stress then its because he has too much going on and his rays are freaking out.
now if you have a problem with my system then head over to my thread and i will meet you there.

I guess it is like any generalization shadow, I know not everyone has had problems with wc marbles or there wouldn't be any CB marbles but it seems like Russian Roulette. I Have had zero problems with cb rays but have lost all the wild rays I have tried. I have checked and double checked everything and still can not explain why I have issues with wc marbles. I didn't cut her open maybe she had a hook in her who knows. But I know for sure I won't put myself through that again :(

I am glad yours are doing well for you they are one of my favorite species of rays and will have to get my fix by looking at all the pictures on here :)

:)

Fast forward about 3 weeks.....

This is right before she went back into the big tank, after about a week of puffer hunting. The dent took about 4 weeks to fully pop out.

I think rather then tearing down a few tanks I'll actually be putting a few more up ;)
I'll be seperating the midget Marbles and pulling the rest of the males out of the big tank. Currently on the maidden voyage of drilling 125s as that will be temp housing for the couple males and the few midgets.

I'll do an update this weekend. Should have everyone moved.

I'm not here to argue either, but rather discuss.

I am on a budget. A budget that doesn't exactly allow me to just run out and buy a $1K UV on nothing but hopes that it makes stuff better. Now, IF everyone here agreed they were necessary it would be one thing but they can't. It's a controversial subject. I personally think they could be usefull IF you were in import/export or some kind of retail store where fish come and go, but I fail to see the use of having one in a tank where you drop a few rays in and keep them. You should be able to kill any problems with meds and as long as you properly QT stuff you shouldn't be introducing anything the UV would kill. The fact that I'd be spending several hundred dollars every year on bulbs doesn't make them any more appealing. Now, IF someone can convince me otherwise PLEASE do. I'm just a firm believer that immune systems can adapt. Just like the germaphobe that was convinced to get a dog then died cause his immune system didn't know WTF to do. I don't wanna put my rays in the same boat. I'm not one to try to pinch pennies or shortcut my rays, I just don't have the loot to be throwing at controversial things that some people swear aren't necessary in keeping rays. Bead filters are another good example.

I said I might be in over my head and you were quick to agree, telling me to sell rays and put the money into my filtration. Are you sure my filtration is inadequate? Ever seen it? I've never seen anyone using similar ratios of K1 to bio load. As far as too many rays, my system allows for 150 gallons of water per ray. Not too bad considering the 3 males are like 10" and the 5 females are like 12-15" They have 40 ft2 of tank footprint.

I'm not saying my setups are ideal, but I'm just failing to see the flaws. This leads me to think it has more to do with the livestock then the systems themselves.

As far as meds like I said it's not an issue of cost, it's an isssue of whether ot not it's necassary. There's 1 KG of Metro, A half gallon of Prazi, and a KG of Bifuran en route. My problem is justification. IF they're all eating and back up to the daily food intake what do you do? Treat as a preventitive? Beef them up first? Not treat at all? Or treat everyone with everything so after a few hundy in meds I feel as though I did my part? Do I try to fix something that may not be broke? IF it is strickly stress related meds could be the straw that breaks the camel's back and sends them all into a downward spiral if they're allready having a hard time just dealing with eachother.

I'm all for advice, don't get me wrong, but please help me understand why. :)
