My second ghetto pond

I have absolutely no clue as to what caused the spike.
The same thing has happened to all three tanks i have down here, after a few months of stability they suddenly decide to blow up with the ammonia readings then after a couple months of regular waterchanges it goes back to normal.. i just dont get it

Has your water company changed anything? That would be my first guess and then my second would be to check the media and see if there is anything built up in there.

In that article it says "It is best NOT to treat fish in the main aquarium with antibiotics. These medications can greatly weaken and even completely kill off the biological filter base, which in turn will cause new tank syndrome to occur, or result in the aquarium to have to cycle all over again."

Maybe that is your problem? You're treating him in his main enclosure and it is killing off the beneficial bacteria...Idk

Wow that really sux mate- the things we do for an rtc.
I wouldn't move her in that condition , the stress would be too much for it to handle.
I had a tsn that had suddenly got stomach bloat at first then began getting sores and redness like your rtc- water parameters were perfect- and my rtc was happy as- I tried to save the tsn but condition worsened after I put it in hospital tank. I felt sorry for it and put it out of its misery- FREEZER. Sad day.
I figured out that it had swollowed an airline suction cup that went missing months earlier..... Never used em since .....

Well i have moved interstate, the only thing i definitely know is different between brisbanes water and melbournes water is that melbourne has flouride. That wouldnt cause a random ammonia spike after 6 months though would it?

Sorry to hear about your tsn, Im am certainly not moving her. You can just tell by the way she looks that it would be wayyy too stressful and would most definitely kill her. She is also not being treated with antibiotics, so there is nothing destroying any beneficial bacteria.

Does anybody think that antibiotics are a good idea? i wouldnt even know which type is safe to use for fish. Being a veterinary nurse i could probably get my hands on some, Im just not sure if its a good idea. God I cant think straight, i hate being stressed.

I would just keep the water pristine and keep temp slightly on the lower range, this will probably help it breath better until it recovers. (warmer water contains less oxygen and if your fish has ammonia burn on the gills, I believe it will have the inability to effectively get air through its gills)

fluoride does kill bacteria like arsenic kills us, but my tap water has fluoride also and I don't have any problems I use pond prime conditioner. What water conditioner are ya using to remove the chlorine and other chemicals from the water? maybe its not working?

I didnt think flouride would cause a problem, but it was the only thing that i could come up with that has changed in the tanks.
As stated before, i am using prime water conditioner to both treat new water for chlorine/chloramines and to detoxify the ammonia existing in the pool.

Sally has made it through another night.
