Rookie at plants questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
6700/6700 would be best for plants imo, 6700/10000 would work also but I feel 6700/6700 would be the best route to go for most usable light for the plants. acinic doesn't help plants almost at all, it's used much more for reef setups

Ya a t8 wouldn't be enough for as far from the substrate as it is imo. Upgrading to t5 or t5ho would definitely offer more usable light for the plants

I have a bit of experience with planted tanks, my first tank (still running) is a heavily planted 20H with DIY LED fixture from rapidled.com that I ran co2 on for a while. I stopped co2 and noticed that algae hasn't been creeping up so would rather leave it off than deal with filling it occasionally (still lots of good plant growth). I'm not sure if it's allowed here, but plantedtank.net is an excellent resource on planted tanks (where I learned everything I know about planted tanks)

So, I went and got this stuff today and I pick up the light tomorrow:

Good choice for just starting off for sure :)

I used/use those in my 20H with good success. If you want to stay with liquid ferts, pfertz is also very good (separate ferts: nitrogen, potassium, phosphate). Dry ferts are overall cheaper but I prefer liquid also myself, just easier to dose

Thanks for the help and with this light tomorrow im going to pick up a 6700 to go with the 10k and try that for now. I will be keeping some fish also in there and it seems that helps also from what I've been reading. New plants will be in at the store tomorrow and might grab a few more :)

keep in mind cryps dont like excel .. if you try also the swords use alot of the nutrients your best bet is to get mexican red clay and roll them into dime sized balls and let dry in the sun  once dry put the balls under the sand around the plants  the plants will get alot of iron from them and last a long long time now with your lights your around 1.5 watts per gal so thats not bad for a low  to low mid  light tank also look up  a do it your self co2 it dosnt cost much and each batch last 2 to 3 weeks that would also help good luck and the tank looks good (dirt tanks are the best check them out)

Thanks, however I'm not using co2 and right now have a 48" and 36" led on it. Have tabs in the sand and everything is doing well and you can see growth with new leaves already. Have to take out the one fake once some get hight.

Thanks for the replies and after reading some stickies I will use excel. I'm not really looking to keep hard plants but just want to have a nice planted tank with some community fish if that makes sense. I will not be using co2 for ease of care of the tank. I do water changes every 3 days on all my tanks. Yes the fake one will come out in the back middle when I find something for its place.View attachment 806247

Keep the advice coming and thanks again.

That is a very simple problem. You are looking at leaves that are in their emergent growth phase. The new leaves that are growing in are long and skinny, with short stems. The leaves that are dying are all emergent growth, which will always die off. There is nothing to worry about.
