that is really rare. I remember back in 1996 I had brought a cariba to the US, and it was one of the only ones around, someone had offered me $500 bucks for it and I wouldn't sell it. But of course that was when internet was just at its infancy, we had dial ups, and within a few years, all the piranha keepers got connected, it was the good ole days!

I wonder who imported the cariba that you got back then, I wanted more so bad, I drove up and down Michigan, and to Toronoto looking for them. One time I found a red bellie with a faint humeral spot and though I struck gold!

and I agree with you as for caribe being the most viscious of them all, he slowly killed off all the red bellies that I had with him, even one that was twice his size he managed to kill.

I assume importing/exporting has something to do with it!

going back to your original topic...of piraya needing more pristine water. I'm not 100% convinced on it, but yes they do come from larger river systems compared to cariba that come from the Illanos, that dries up now and then. I did once keep over 40 large ones in a 240 gallon tank, mixed ternetezi, piraya, cariba, and the water would get so acidic ph down to 5 in a day between water changes. The pirayas did not however suffer any observable signs of distress.

pirayas are by far my favorites, followed by cariba, then ternetzi.

That had to be one hell of a bio-load on the 240 gal. Sounds like it would have been a sight to see , Pygos are my favorite also and also the same order . Iv'e only been fourtanate to have Piraya the last 4 yrs. + so i only have that time span to base my observences on . In all the years iv'e kept P's i only had one bout with HITH and that was due to being lazy and younger not doing proper water changes and maintance . Since i have had Piraya and only in a mixed shoal they seem to show the first signs of distress with any fluctuation in water chemistry . My Caribe show nothing while the Piraya has a little eye cloud or excessive mucas or slime coat . Also i have had to deal with HITH a few times . They are indeed my favorite Pygo , from the color variation of flames ( yellow ,orange , red ) , to attitude !,to very little loss of color into adulthood , and size , just the way they carry themselves , they are Awesome !!! Who knows maybe im doing something wrong ?

So i was wondering with other members having problems with there Piraya that i know of that are adult fish , I know alot of juvinile Piraya have come out of NJ since early this year ( and some of them i have seen are georgeous beautiful looking fish ! I still plan on getting some :)) I was just wondering how they seem to be doing ?

Was wondering what were some of the other Meds you guys were using for the treatment of HITH , it seems like the Parisitegaurd isnt working like it used to . Thanks for any insite or info !:)
