Good eye , had a couple more RBP's that got ate early in the grow out and picked up the Caribe later , of course the Caribe was head honcho but cohabitated well .

that is really rare. I remember back in 1996 I had brought a cariba to the US, and it was one of the only ones around, someone had offered me $500 bucks for it and I wouldn't sell it. But of course that was when internet was just at its infancy, we had dial ups, and within a few years, all the piranha keepers got connected, it was the good ole days!
I wonder who imported the cariba that you got back then, I wanted more so bad, I drove up and down Michigan, and to Toronoto looking for them. One time I found a red bellie with a faint humeral spot and though I struck gold!
and I agree with you as for caribe being the most viscious of them all, he slowly killed off all the red bellies that I had with him, even one that was twice his size he managed to kill.

I purchased that one in 1974 at Black Lagoon for $80.00 , dont ask me how i remember that but it was the first different species other than RBP's . Its name was Sandrin , LOL !!! Was'nt much other than RBP's and a few sparse Black Piranha , that was a find !
wow, that was a rare find for way back! and $80.00 back then is like $500 now right? or more! awesome to meet you here, I go back, but not that far back, I wasn't even a thought yet...
going back to your original topic...of piraya needing more pristine water. I'm not 100% convinced on it, but yes they do come from larger river systems compared to cariba that come from the Illanos, that dries up now and then. I did once keep over 40 large ones in a 240 gallon tank, mixed ternetezi, piraya, cariba, and the water would get so acidic ph down to 5 in a day between water changes. The pirayas did not however suffer any observable signs of distress.
pirayas are by far my favorites, followed by cariba, then ternetzi.
