Tell me if I'm strange..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Army has me stationed in Missouri right now. In February I have to go home to Florida for my baby to be born. I'm worried about my fish enough that I'm considering taking at least a few with me. No, you're not the worst. LOL

Most the people I interact with don't understand my hobby nor do they want to. I don't constantly worry about my kids either but I wouldn't just leave them with anyone.

haha very nicely said. I would say this sums it up for me....I cant ask someone to check up on them because no one cares as much as I do. I wouldnt say I worry about them CONSTANTLY, but it would be a lie if I said they weren't in the back of my mind.

being concerned while away from home is all because there is no such thing as a *quick course* in fish care that we can tell fish sitters.
If there was, no one reading mfk would have any problems! and for me, that has nothing to do with a "sitter" caring.
not to mention Murphys Law with tank equipment.
:-o

No your not strange. I worry all the time. But not just my fish, i worry about my cat the most. Hes such a scaredy cat. My dog too but most of the time we take him with us. Unfortunetly hes nearing the end of his lifespan and hes got some phsical problems that dont allow him to excersize properly :(. So we cant take him anymore. But we always have somebody come over and feed them for us. The biggest problem i find is OVERFEEDING my neighbor who we hired last-time fed the fish SOOOO MUCH I couldnt see the bottom of the tank, just food! I was like HOLY CRAP! what are you feeding here?! A COW? He fed like half a pound of flakes over the course of 2 days! I only had 1 55gal tank at the time to feed!

Hello; This is very true. Having had a couple of disasters due to people trying to be helpful I no longer get anyone to tend my tanks while away. For up to a week I take no extra precautions. I have the lights on timers as a matter of normal process.
I once had to be gone for three weeks. I set up auto feeders a week or so ahead of time for light feeding and had everything in good shape before I left. I had filters and air pumps that were known to self start/prime after a power outage. Lights on timers. Fairly low stocking densities, although not as low as my current setups. I know that I was lucky but came back to everything being fine.

Yep, you're not alone - I have to be gone a week for work and my brother is going to be taking care of things for me, he does ok but I AM going to premeasure out food in little cups.

Not at all you have money in to something you care about its not strange at all I went on vacation for a week and was wondering how they were and I would call every other day to check on the person watching them to make sure they were feeding them right and not over feeding and when I came home I looked through all 3 of my tanks to make sure every one was still alive it's not strange at all

Definitely not strange. I just got back from vacation and despite being checked on by a pet sitting service I've been using for years the three fish in my 8g are all quite sick and I doubt they'll make it through the night :nilly:. I was more worried about my 5 year old betta then them though (luckily she's fine.) I mainly worry about my cat and rabbits which all require special, tedious care.

Nah not strange. When I first got my tank I was constantly paranoid something would go wrong when I left it unattended for too long. My dad also would overfeed them (still does sometimes) & cause massive algae blooms which would take days to clear up but that's the worst that's ever happened.

Ha sound like me. My cats always the first thing on my mind when I walk through the door. I never come home at a regular time but she always seems to know and sits in the window.

I wrote up a 2 page paper on how to care for my pets... The person my mom hired (a neighbor) won't even put her elbow into my bearded dragon's cage... Wimp... Shes terrified of my crayfish, I can't wait to finish setting up my lionfish tank...
