I got a FX5 about a month ago and it has just been sitting in my tank with the glass lids holding the intake/output in the water. How on earth do you guys manage to secure your FX5s on your big tanks? The clip simply does not seem large enough to get over the plastic rim at the top.

I have an oceanic 180 and it took a bit of muscle but they all went on fine, in fact there are three fx5s on the tank.

I just tried to force it with about 75% of my strength and it doesn't clear the lip on the inside of the tank. The plastic is incredibly sturdy though, to Fluval's credit.
I might try to heat up a knife and cut/melt the small lip (about 1/6" )

Just force it. That's what I did. I thought it was gonna break but it didn't. The only drawback is it's really hard to remove.

It is very hard to get them over. On my 210 it was very hard, and one of the clips broke, though the lfs I bought it from replaced the clip for free even though it was my fault. Good luck getting it on.
I had an issue with a odd thick rim on a 150 we had.
I hit the clip with the wife's hairdryer for 5 minutes and stuck it on with ease.
Not so easy to get off.
