im a little confused by the drawing lol there are green going to the three pumps but nothing leaving lol. what are the pumps used for just moving water back and forth or is the water going through any filtration besides the green tub?

did you ever check into the idea of asking a company like "culligan" about a water softening system to help with your nasty well water? just a thought you may get lucky and get some smart guy thats had an issue like yours before and has the answer?!
those of you running drip systems...how do you treat your water with a de-chlorinator? or are we dripping and not treating? seems risky to me to drip faucet water untreated

You will just have to improvise.
maybe a 2 stage storage system
one treated and nother treating.
so you just constantly replenish the treated tub with treated water from the treatment tank
makes sense, a tongue twister right there for ya!!

Very interesting thread, with stacks of good info and ideas. My gf hates that I always find something 'new' to tinker with the tank. 'I though of a way to improve the filters' 'I thought of a way to better the plumbing' 'I know how to improve clarity of the water now' etc etc.

I have pothos (terrestrial plant) in my filter system. My nitrates used to be 40-60+ppm with weekly water changes. Since adding just a few pothos plants the nitrates are constantly 0ppm even after 3 weeks with no water change.
I still try to do weekly if not fortnightly water changes but am happy that whenever I test the water before a change the nitrates are 0ppm.
The tank is a 650g so many people here have a lot bigger systems, that are also more heavily stocked. But there was a massive change from pre pothos to after pothos added in regards to nitrates.
I like the terrestrial plants in filter systems as they are very easy to keep requiring little to no maintenance (never had luck with aquatic plants)
Just thought I would share my limited experience.
Also there is a good thread on here about plant use for filtration which also has heaps of good info.

Not sure about where you're at but where I'm at PVC is cheap! Even cheaper if you reuse it. For years. I bet I have some stuff here that has seen half a dozen systems... lol. It's actually a hobbyists duct tape. You can build sock holders, siphons, dividers, bases for bio towers, heck I could go on..... Stuff is just great! The plumming does get a little elaborate on the growout tank, but it's just cause of having 2 tanks tied to the sump and a wet dry on top of the sump. It's a lot of PVC, but I really don't think I have much for flow issues...... The over under tank setup is great for waterchanges cause I just cut water to the bottom tank, drain, refill, then open up that leg of the system again. Filter never gets shut down.
I just used whole house carbon filters. I have a pair on the water main before the manifold that runs 1/8 line to all the systems. This manifold also has a drinking water apprroved rv garden hose on it which I use for manual filling of the tanks.
I'm no longer a fan of drips myself. I think it's easy to justify not doing waterchanges. It's the Cadillac of procrastination. Maybe it was just me but when I was running a drip I really didn't think I needed to do waterchanges. My rays lead me to believe I was way wrong in this train of thought.
You mean my nasty city water..... I've spoke to numerous people/reps about water softeners. They do nothing to PH. Any of them. I think I can achieve the results I'm after with RO.....
When I get a house I can call mine I'm sure I'll be messing with rain water.... Assuming such a thing still exists by the time I get my 1st house..... lol. Gonna be a scary build when that happens...... People think I'm nuts when I start discussing the ideas I've had brewing over the last half decade about how I'm gonna "bless" my new home with the gift of fish. I want to walk over them in the basement and look down on them from the living room. Some people have skylights in the upper level of their homes. I want a skylight in my living room floor so I can see my pond and feeding bridge from the living room couch.
***** Any of you that haven't seen Firemedic's thread about Pathos should check it out. It was in the ray section so some of you non ray keepers may have missed it but he used Pathos to eat Nitrates for months without WCs..... Great for a ray or 2, but pointless if you have a tank full of rays unless you have a giant pond just for plants.

Simple whole house Carbon filters do the job if you don't have Chloramines.....
K1 is what's in my reactors (blue drums) earlier in this thread. Some of if not the best bio media on the market if you ask me.
Oh I'm sorry i did not want to clutter the drawing with the three 1 1/2 return lines going back to the tank...So 5 1.5 inch drains feed my tub "bio reactor " and the glass filter the water runs through them then is pushed through the two filters finally back to the tank pretty simple right ??????
I don't treat my water before dripping into my tanks. I still haven't had my incoming water tested. When I get back (in Mexico now) I will have the water company test the water going into my tank. Knobhill has asked me for this data to compare with his LA water. It will be a good baseline for people to determine if they need to filter their water before using. it.
I'm confused.... 5 1.5" drains total or just for the tub?
5 1.5" drains will run 6750 gph. Not 9K.
Don't mean to be a bean counter or anything.... Just was wondering why I'm using 4 2" drains for my measely 7K GPH when your achieving 9K gph with smaller drain area.
