CREATING THE ULTIMATE FILTRATION AND EVOLVING WITH YOUR FISH!!!!!!

You have your sick tank connected with the whole system? Is this a true sick tank, where you add meds and treat fish?
Yes Jose I do because i run a UV i first seperate affected fish because i believe Parasite Bad Bacteria and Virus is always present MOST sickness is caused by STRESS the immune system is down therefore take away stress fish gets better!!!!:):):)Now there are times when a fish is in to BAD of shape that it does require Meds at that point i have another tank devoted do do just that!!!:)Now i try to catch things before they get to that point BUT i cannot say that i always do!!;)

the units were primarily for the smallest of particles and required some type of prefilter before them to catch larger solids so the cyclone did not clog

Pre-filter for your pre-pre-filter to pre-filter your pre-filters haha! It never ends :)

According to the description all the solids go into the middle for draining/cleaning. What part of the system is where it gets clogged? The way I read it seems as if there's nothing to get clogged...?

I researched the cyclone/vortex type prefilter a few months ago when I saw a version of it for sale on aquaticeco. Ill try and dig up some of the bookmarked links on my computer at home and post them later.

What I can remember that turned me away from them was the units were primarily for the smallest of particles and required some type of prefilter before them to catch larger solids so the cyclone did not clog. Also they needed a great deal of pump pressure to work properly.

You are correct. I spoke with the distributor at an irrigation convention. It's mainly to separate sand from the water before entering the sprinkler nozzles. Only works on particles with a specific gravity and poop is not the right SG.

Haha I know, crazy right. That was one of the first red flags I can remember. I think one of the main concerns was leaves or similar debris getting trapped in the filter because it is intended for outdoor ponds.

What are your thoughts on the freshwater protein skimmers (Clarity brand)? I've seen them in operation and the sludge they pull out is incredible.

Good question. Some like them some don't. Personally, I feel it removes some but not enough. Good at removing meds or when you treat with salt and the koi drops its slim coat. I like to think that if your water is prestine you should not have that much protein.

That's always been a goal for koi keepers. Because after all it's not that easy to do water changes on a huge pond! I actually ran across this site a while back and saved all the pdf articles, just haven't gotten around to reading them. http://www.mankysanke.co.uk/html/anoxic_filtration.html

It's a very simple concept that wouldn't be hard to do on a pond. But on a tank, that might take some creativity :)

Thank you Jose for the awesome link!! I am sooooo intrigued by this. Makes alot of sense. Can't wait to apply this to one of my tanks.

I'm confused.... 5 1.5" drains total or just for the tub?

5 1.5" drains will run 6750 gph. Not 9K.

Don't mean to be a bean counter or anything.... Just was wondering why I'm using 4 2" drains for my measely 7K GPH when your achieving 9K gph with smaller drain area.
Actually, five 1.5in drains should run close to 9k, if not more than that. If you look at the CPR CS150 overflow box with a single 1.5in bulkhead, with all those turn an slots in the overflow box, it still gives 1600gph

I see. So let me ask you this, what would be your ideal setup for a large well-stocked koi pond? Something along the lines of 5-8000 gallons. I've been tossing ideas around in my head for a long time now. This is one setup I've thought about, running multiple pumps and filter systems:

- Bottom drain(s) -> gravity fed vortex settling chamber -> PUMP1 -> UV light -> bakki shower -> POND
- Skimmer -> PUMP2 -> pressurized mechanical cartridge filter -> pressurized bead filter -> UV light -> bog/plant filter > waterfall - POND

I would also run a 3rd pump but simply to power some underwater jets/aeration system. Anything you'd setup differently? My ideal setup would be different pumps pulling in water from different areas of the pond and running through different filter systems.

That's the reason why my system doesn't have any pre-filter, yet. Gotta wait for the ultimate one, or just backwash my filter weekly lol
