Difference between Rtg,banjar ,green arowana

Yellow tail(Scleropages macrocephalus) is a natural species. While the Banjar Red is a hybrid. It's a confusing hybrid though. I've seen SR(Scleropages legendrei)xGreen(Scleropages formosus) and SR(S. legendrei)xYT(S. macrocephalus) being called Banjar Red. But really, it depends on where you got it from too. I've seen farms calling Yellow Tail and Banjar Red, the same thing. I've seen farms calling Yellow Tail natural and Banjar Red hybrid. But I believe the real S. macrocephalus should just be called Yellow Tail Arowana. While the hybrid of S.legendrei and macrocephalus should be called Banjar Red. Since S.macrocephalus originated from the Banjar masin in Indo. Since the hybrids are crossed and have legendrei genes, Banjar Red would make more sense for the hybrid. Like I said it's confusing since not many research is being done on Aro. You can't really rely on farm/common names. There's too many crossbreeds in the Asian Aro world now. I've seen XBxRTG,HBRTGxRTG,XBxHBRTG,XBxSR,XBxGreen,SRxRTG,SRxHBRTG,SRxGreen, RTGxGreen, etc many more combinations. Get's complicated.

1 thing i dont agreed ... banjar red is pure strain breed of aro. its not a hybrid and its really originated from barito river, banjarmasin, south kalimantan.

Too many common name making me get mixed up. :P I've seen people say Yellow tail come from Banjar masin. I've also seen people say Banjar Red come from Banjar masin. The hybrid is the G1.5 Red, right? I've seen people calling Banjar Red, G1.5 Red. I've seen people calling G1.5 Red, the Yellow tail. People should just stick to scientific name.

that i agreed .... so mixed up with lot of names
my first impression was 1.5 red = banjar but then i learned that 1.5 is a hybrid between red x banjar/green

abt yellow tail, i used to i mixed up n confused coz some ppl saying its green or banjar for example the thread bro nithin posted IDENTIFY-PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!... some ppl would say its yellow tail becoz it got yellowish tint and some others would say yellow tail is actually banjar ... but i concluded on my own that yellow tail is a green.
in indo theres also aro named as 'banjar kuning' aka yellow banjar. but i believed that yellow banjar is actually a hybrid of banjar x green or just a low grade of banjar (again its my own perception)

rather than so mixed up with names .... i rather stick to common names like banjar and green.

I believe Yellow tail is a natural species because scientist describe Scleropages macrocephalus as the yellow tail silver Asian Aro.

perception among ppl could be as different as you and i ... that just personal preference
But could you describe to me what a Banjar Red should look like? With all these common names and different views, I'm starting to lose reference of what a Banjar Red looks like.

This particular banjar red is a really good example for 'my banjar red version' (what a banjar red supposed to look like) :
  • There are prominent greenish markings through the whole body (in indo , we call it horse shoe marking, some sr/rtg could had the marking also but particularly around back part of the body near the anal and dorsal fins and not as striking as banjar or green)
  • There are straight black/grey markings around the anal , dorsal and caudal fins
  • Head shape is more like rounded bullet type (now through selection breeding, the head shape can be even similar to super red) and have brownish lips color
  • The red fin color can be as striking as a super red when juvenile, as it grows up the color would fade away to orangy or just yellow

But now through selection breeding techniques, farmers managed to get rid some of the native features of banjar red and making it more and more alike super red.
Examples :
Banjar red G1-export quality - Indodragon
Noticed how the color fins can even match a juve super red and the black/grey marking in the fins is also gone ? That grown banjar red have almost invisible horse shoe green marking and quite staggering redness for that size. The head also more and more alike super red, i'm not surprise if i found a spoon head banjar red.:naughty:
Here's another some example banjar red pics Banjar red

From your description, it reminds me of the 1.5 Red. Banjar Red and 1.5 Red are starting to look similar now. Too much selective and cross breeding is making things more confusing. My friend's Banjar Red, dorsal, caudal and anal fin are red. When it got to 20", the red started turning into yellow. What's your thoughts on this? Some sort of hybrid?

Imperial banjar at 14"

Its all really confusing. All I know is my juveniles have yellow tails when I it this guy as a juvi he had a bit of yellow on his tail. But others in his batch had red as wellImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1346672183.072038.jpg

True ... from what i've seen here in MFK and maybe the same as your friend have an excellent banjar red, when it got 18-20" the redness started to washed out.
I cant deny that most banjar red is hybrid , i believe the tendency was already occurred back to arowanas trend back in the mid 90s. At the first maybe they were trying to boost super red stock but because super red is the hardest to bred, some farmers tried to cross super red with others like banjar red, rtg and maybe even green. Along the way, they realized the banjar red quality through crossed bred could be taken to another level then after next 2-3 generation, banjar red can be seen as it is nowadays.

Now a bit brain storming ...
i and my friends once debated that the root of all strains of asian arowanas was super red.
whats your thought abt this ?
