Albany area fish stores

The major problem with eddies is all their fish are small except for 2 of their tanks which they stuff full of fish they get on trade. You can get a 3 inch jag for $20+ at eddies or go to davey jones and get the same $15.. I prefer davey jones now but wouldn't mind if someone opened up a better shop

I agree about the size issue as well. They just don't like the larger fish. I asked if I could trade in some 4" silver dollars that I bought from them a while back and they were very hesitant about accepting "larger fish". According to them, a 5 inch male peacock cichlid is a pretty large fish too and they couldn't accept him at the moment due to limited space...I was a little annoyed at that since I wouldn't consider a 5 inch african cichlid an abnormally large fish but it was bigger than everything they had in stock. And they sell the standard tsns and rtcs so its not like they don't sell fish that grow larger. I'm almost considering asking them if they'll take my 34 inch rtc as a joke just to see what they say. Also, I know it is not their responsibility to take any fish back but I just had a few extras and didn't want to deal with selling them since they weren't anything spectacular, just common stuff.

They do have a better trade in policy that daveys though which is alot more stringent and they'll only accept stuff that you get there if I remember correctly. Obviously you can't judge a store based on their trade in policy but it is a factor for some people who bought too many fish and don't want to deal with selling them on cl.

I agree with the trade thing too but eddies doesn't take fish anymore it seems like. I have a lyonsi cichlid that I called him about. I explained to him that it was 6" it's a endangered cichlid and i just can't keep it with my fish anymore. And he says he has no room so I went up there and they had no fish really in the cichlid tanks so I don't think he takes fish anymore and there staff isn't always nice or easy to deal with either

As a friend of eddies and he's known my father for 30+ years he knows his stuff but loses a lot of business due to not selling larger fish. As for the never having space for fish anymore that's his choice and who can blame him but he has a lot of space in the basement for trades. Davey jones rule of trades on fish you buy from them is a great policy if you buy there all the time. Always nice to see the other Albany fish keepers. Should stay in contact if people ever wanna trade or see fish at stores others would like

I also enjoy talking with fellow albany members, it is good to build local networks for this kind of stuff.

Since we're on the topic on the local fish stores, I will admit that I have got one good deal at eddies that more than made up for some of the not so great deals. For some crazy reason they had 2 ~7" clown loaches for 30 bucks a piece. They were both bigger than that one that has been at daveys forever. Also, If you've ever asked about that big loach they have, supposedly it killed off all of the other loaches they tried puting it with....that is one mean loach:WHOA:

Also, I've had good and bad experiences with the staff at both. Eddie knows his stuff for sure and isn't too bad to deal with. Some of the others can be less than pleasant at times though. Sometimes when I go to daveys I can't tell if the owners are being sarcastic or rude or what lol. I've felt less than welcome at both before(and many other fish stores) so its no big deal.

As for the koi and salt comment, I have to agree with you there but I am not sure why it is that way. Out of all of the times that I've been there, I've never seen anyone buy a gold fish or a koi? I assume it happens obviously but I've only ever seen people buy fresh or every once in a while someone buys a salt fish or some live rock.

Ed does know his stuff but what gets me about eddies is that he gets the same old south and central american cichlids in and he has tanks divided in to smaller tanks the other thing is that he Always has sales on community and salt water fish and on African cichlids but never on south and central cichlids which more people own them more I think in this area and he doesn't get odd ball fish in that much any more either

Lol I agree there too...also, the africans he gets in always seem to be really low quality. I would even say that petsmart probably gets nicer stuff and for cheaper. Daveys has much better quality africans too. I'm not sure why he doesn't get a different supplier or something. I've ordered fish off of aquabid that were a fraction of the price and way better quality.

I also just wanted to say that I'm not trying to bash any particular store, just stating my opinions. I can only imagine how hard it is to run a fish store in this economy and I'm glad we have any locally to begin with.
