Freezing is about (killing) parasites & disease, pre-thawing is about not frost-biting the gut tissues and/or generally lowering the animals internal temperature (cold blooded remember, so they can't just crank up the thermostat like us with ice-cream).
Spines, teeth & claws are about internal injuries: punctures & cuts. Different process/issues. Gut of a predatory tropical fish that eats prawns & catfish & sculpins is going to be puncture-tough as leather. Ever seen footage of a rock-python eating a male gazelle... replete with sharpened horns? Same. However, they're not going to be adapted to eating cold, particularly frozen.
