Okay, i have read that polys have very poor eyesight; however, I think that is not the case with my ornate. Why? Because every time i come up to, around or walk by my tank, he goes hauling a** back behind the plants into his favorite hiding place. I mean i can turn off all my lights, turn on my moonlight, sit 6ft from my tank and still get the same results. What is the deal???

bichir have poor eyesight but excellet smell.

and they have external nostrils that can detects food or predators. But i also must say I think people are starting to exaggerate because my senegalus most times comes up to the glass when go to the tank. While my baby sen will dart away when i enter the room. I d nothing but walk in no opening doors not touching anything just walking in and he darts the farthest he can. But then again their eyesight could be soo poor that their sense of vibrations could be at the very best thats what i personally think especially wild caught species. Because not every lake or river is as crystal clear as a home kept tank. so they will need to snatch prey as fast as they can.

^ hmm interesting never thought about it like that

They sense vibrations.
See all those little dots around the bichirs head?
Those are sensory pits.

Also, while they have bad eyesight, they are not blind.
They most likely see you as a big blob coming toward them.

They sure don't have a problem seeing a 6 feet (1,829 mm) tall person.
Can't see a 3mm pellet though. All the other fish can.

I wonder if there is any scientific research on this? Do they see better in the dark?

They don't see better they just have the advantage because they can sense the presence of prey or predators. The fish can only feel them coming or felling them bite
