Are you like me when you meet someone who keeps fish?

Golden rules to follow if you want to advance your hobby(from someone who also collect fossils and ancient coins)

1) Display your wares in the best possible manner
2) Speak only when spoken to.

None of my friends keep fish, although I have tried on a couple of them. They really like my tank but I think it looks too overwhelming for them. Unless you're passionate about fish, you're not going to do all the work required with a monster tank. I couldn't even talk them into a 'small' 125 gallon.

I still haven't seen a sump in person except for mine. I read up and looked at lots of pictures for a long time before putting mine together.

And no, I've never even run into another fishkeeper at a party or anything... If I did, I imagine the scenario would be a lot like you describe.

hmmm?

In my case, if an eight foot tank in a living room or a 14" framed fossil fish hanging on the wall does not generate a question or two, the person is not interested.

I'm just the same as you, but I only talk a lot when I meet someone that really into fish keeping. My best friend that I know for over 10 years is also a fish keeper, we can talk about fish for hours before realize what time it is!

My buddy on mfk "Tydus" keeps fish so i always have someone to talk to about fish, its pretty amusing to go off about your hobby and have the person listening to you stay interested and attentive enough to carry on the conversation. We do what we call "fish runs" and hit up every LFS is town hoping to find something interesting and just for laughs we like to test the workers at the store by asking absurd or species specific questions. We also give eachother heads up on good deals and hookups. Towards people who don't keep fish though, I don't talk about fish unless it is mentioned.....then I go crazy and start ranting. Although my girlfriend has taken a tiny interest in fish and just to try and understand me a little better she got herself a betta setup, and its wonderful feeling to be able to educate her on my hobbies and interests.
