dimentions, if it is a super wide tank you could have large fish, there are some 24 inch and some 36 inch wide 3 footers. Tallness helps a little(some fish like to go up and down too).

Wide tanks don't allow for swimming room, only turning.

A Five Star General would be perfect for a three footer.
They are extremely predatory, max out @ 7" to 8" and look great.

I was thinking African too I have a 40b with a couple black calvus and a yellow compressicep and I like it but they grow slow I know its in the South/central American section but its just a suggestion
