Overflow is filling up with water and sump pump is pumping most of the water out of sump back into main tank. Help!!!!!

How high does the sump fill when you shut the pump off?

What model pump is it and how many GPH?

What size pipe is the drain to the sump?

What size piping are the 3 returns to the tank?

I think your problem is that you need to have a hole to vent the drain as it comes out of the tank. As it is now it has no air to help it drain

Need to know size of drains. Size of pump. If you add more water to the sump, will it fill up the tank where it wants to overflow the tank? As far as noise goes, you can try to put some airline tubing into the bulkhead to help vent it. Or maybe come off the back with a PVC tee fitting with open end facing up while the other end going to the drain hose

1) Rio hyperflow20, 1290
2)1.5 inch
3)3 returns are 1inch, tubing is 3/4 inch

Yes

I would put another bulkhead in the overflow. Control one drain with a gate valve to run a full siphon and use the other as an emergency drain. Called the herbie method. This will help with the gurgling and should help with the flushing motion of the drain and sump. You should also add more water to the sump to keep the pump submerged more.

I have been getting this problem lately when I do water changes on my 180...It has one of those overflows that has a check valve sticking in the top of it and after I have refilled the tank and restarted the siphon the pump sends all of the water up to the tank unless I draw air from the check valve.

put a ball valve on sounds like the pump is working to fast and the over flow cant keep up
