tanks falling through floors?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yep. :nilly:

This guy lives in a little house perched on the side of a cliff. It is filled practically wall-to-wall with monster tanks. If ever a floor was to collapse it would be his, but it still hasn't happened....

Hello; My take from this is that his house must indeed be built stout enough and is in good enough condition to handle the load. To imply that because his house has stood up to the load, then other houses will handle the same loads does not seem correct to me. Those built as well will likely hold up, but others may not.

I guess that I am in the group that would consider it a failure if my floor sagged under my tanks, even if they did not actually fall thru the floor.
My feeling is that I want to someday remove the tanks and have the house and floors be the same as before the tanks were installed.

I guess I am speaking tongue-in-cheek, to some extent. Everything you mentioned above is correct, but the thread title is "tanks falling through floors?!"

My point is, and always has been, that a tank has never actually fallen through the floor. If there was a thread called "Can your tank cause your floor to sag?" it would be different, but that is not the case....

Hello; I started such a thread a while back with a different title. It got very little response. I believe there have been more reports of floor/structure damage in this thread. I guess the title was not catchy enough?

if the house was built properly, up to code, you'd see significant long term structural damage before anything collapsed. it wouldnt be something sudden without you having any clue.

i doubt a tank would fall through, my dad is always on my case about the weight of the tanks on the first floor even now that i have my own house, had to send my 700 back because he got together with my wife and convinced her that it was a bad idea to rip out the wall going down to the basement and there was no way i was putting it on the first floor, even though a couple of freinds tried to convince me it wouldent do damage, my house is brand new and they wanted to support the floor underneth with steel beams i just didnt trust it though

I'd be pretty hot with Pops after he pulled that with the wife.

Ok time to be honest with myself. I had my old 220 setup in a house built in the 1930's(ish) with a raised foundation. I actually started a thread asking if my floor would hold it. I got the classic responses both yes and no. I decided that if I put it on a load bearing wall perpendicular to the floor joists it would be fine. Well between the original hardwood flooring and the foundation my house has a decent amount of noises I chalk up to"settling". Well about a year anf a half went by with no issues and I slept better as time went on. Well one night I was sleeping on the couch in the living room (don't ask why) and I was jarred awake by a terrible noise. It sounded like my fire eel knocked over one of my huge rocks which I thought was impossible. So I jumped up half asleep, checked all sides of the tank. Looked underneath. Looked all around for a cause of the noise. I didnt see anything out of the ordinary, so I assumed it was the abrubt end to a dream. This isnt far fetched as I sleepwalk regularly amd have crazy dreams. Well I went to work the next day and wasnt there an hour before my wife call hysterical because my tank exploded. looking back I would be willing to bet the noise what the floor settling or even just the sagging floor eventually becomming to much causing my center brace to fail. Causing the front pane to bow and eventually sheer off completely. I cant prove this, but I am willing to be the sacrificial lamb if it will save even one person from the hassle I went through...
