The video shows a 10" male Green Terror (Adinoacara rivulatus) guarding fry. This is normally not an unusual scene, but in this case, it is because they are not his fry. In fact he has never been with a female of his species. Well, he has decided to play parent to a portion of the fry from the Caquetaia kraussi spawn. Rather than feast on them, his parental instinct has somehow "kicked in" and he has become a model surrogate parent, vigorously defending them against all threats. On his part, planned parenthood? Not so much. We have all heard of dogs adopting kittens and vice-versa. I suppose adoption of young by a single parent happens in the fish world, too. Are they his pets? (different genus and species)
