New/Underutilized Species in the Exotic Pet trade

see enough??? you never see rays, wolf fish, tigerfish, and snakes heads. I have never seen one in my life not even at the aquarium...

FW rays are not legal in Florida. I used to see wolf fish in NE all the time but not here in Florida.

I understand watersnakes are easy to obtain from the wild, but never in stores and they are easy to care for and stay small. I know even some reptile guys that confuse water snakes for copperheads/cottonmouths or many people that dont want to look for water snakes for fear of running into venomous species.

How about Ompok catfish? Only seen them one time. Cute and entertaining, glad I bought him when I saw him.

I know they are not real rare, but how about axololtls? I hardly see them and have to go to a real specialty store to find them. Easy to care for, easy to feed, all you really need is cool clean water

We need some domesticated strains of all European minnows such as European minnows, tench, orfe and rudd in United States....so you can have more choices for the pond beside just goldfish and koi.

You native freaks should look into joining NANFA...there's always great articles about native fish and keeping them and how to sustain them in the quarterly issue. It's 20 bucks a month. This month has Elassoma gilberti, which while isn't a "monster" still a pretty cool fish, big personality. You can also buy natives via Jonahsaquarium.com online

I'm going to say I would like to see freshwater pipefish, and maybe Hellbenders available...we have a good stock in PA of the hellbenders but I know they are endangered from coal mining and habitat destruction in WV

I sure would like to have a hellbender...I've wanted one since I was a kid and saw a picture of one in a book.

snake head? go to Asian market you will find a lot of them ..................................................................................................................................... frozen!

Longear sunfish specifically. I have never seen a live sunfish, bass, channel/bullhead cat, minnow, trout, or salmon in my entire life. Despite having spent over 400 hours into catching a single fish I have never caught anything. All I want is to see a live channel catfish in person. THATS IT! But I can't catch for crap!! Id pay 50$ to hold 1 for 5 minutes. Regardless of size. Love to catch me a catfish. Gotta get me a nice catfish. I needs mah catfish...

You need to get out of SF. Come on out here to Fresno area and I can show you all kinds of Bass/Striper/Trout/Sunfish/catfishing almost year round.

One thing about the larger native species (LMBass,SMbass, Bluegill, etc.) is that in some places it is illegal to transport a live gamefish. I know it's true for California. Once I tried to catch some bluegill to stock in my Uncle's private, landlocked pond. I had a valid fishing license, and I caught the fish by hook. I kept them live in a bucket and as I was packing up a 'helpful' warden stopped me and asked what I was doing. Apparently, had I made it the next few feet to my car, I would have been arrested for poaching. I don't understand why, but that's what it is.
