Need an autopsy report

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok here are the readings.
NO3: 20ppm
NO2: .5 ppm
Ammonia: 3 ppm

I have had the tank running for around 1 year 4 months and all my fish have been in the tank for around 8 months to 1 year.

I never use and never recommend strip tests. I recommend API liquid master kit. If we take these values as if they were true (which we should not do - strip tests are notoriuosly unreliable and crude), this is a torture for the fish to live in water like that.

Idk the strips are like 10 years old. Is the API liquid kit readily available. I can go get one tomorrow.

Those ammonia levels are very high, change the water asap, nitrite is also considerably high as well, not sure how you read both and nitrates, seems like somethings off.

Thank you everyone for your great help. I really don't want to lose these guys. I think it might be bad water because my payara and BP are showing visible signs of disease or sickness. Payara has something wrong with his his an the BP hasn't eaten in weeks, has open sores on her head and gill curl.

Do a 50% water change with some aquarium salt, 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons. Just keep up on every 3 day 25% wc at the minimum add 25% more salt every time you do.

Ok. I added salt earlier. I have API freshwater aquarium salt and it says to do a tablespoon for every five gallons. Not to mention the chucks of salt are massive. I just did around have that and let it melt in the tank water before I dumped it in the tank.

Not only the strips are notoriously crude, all tests have a shelf life and none is over a few years.

This is the one I always use: http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Aquarium-Test-Kits/I/Api-Freshwater-Master-Kit.aspx

on sale for $20; note free shipping on orders over $49; otherwise the shipping should be ~ $5.

What you are doing right now may be based on completely false test results. It may or may not be the water parameters issue.

I think it might be a water quality issue because there is something with wrong with my payaras eyes. So I'm going to do water changes every three days. Hopefully it will clear up. This may be a result of having new plumping and a new water system in our house.

Well, now we covered way too many possibilities and variables -

-- parasites,
-- bacterial infection,
-- inadequate tanmates,
-- inadequate water parameters, and
-- a house plumbing/tap water change.

We need to start knocking some of these off otherwise we will be shooting in the dark til the fish die. The easiest one to rule out is water parameters. If you don't have a good test kit, you can take a sample of your water to an LFS - most test for free.

Without knowing the water parameters AND being sure of them, there is little sense in analyzing this situation further. This cannot be overstated.

If your house plumbing has been just changed and the uncured PVC glue is leaching into your tap water and other unforseen bad things too (detergents, lubricants, heavy metals like iron, nickel, cadmium, copper, etc.), more frequent water changes will not help (much), may even make it worse, unless you filter the tap water through a charcoal filter, like, e.g., Brita, etc. for drinking purposes... but then again, one needs to know what exactly been done to the plumbing system and if/how the tap water has been changed.

Ok so I bought the API master test kit today. I don't want to try it out on my main tank(the one we've been discussing) because I did a water change on it this morning an I want to let the water set. I will probably do one tonight though. I did however test it on my 10 gallon tank. Tank specs are fluval C3 filter, many live plants, temp around 74F. The stock is one female pearl Honduran red point, 3 synodontis petricolas. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea of what I'm doing. I followed the instructions exactly. From left to right it goes ammonia, NO2, NO3. Is this good?
