Video of My Ornatums perhaps spawning?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sucks to hear that the spaw wasnt successful, but if theyre gonna try then they will probably figure it out one of these days and with how long your fish live and continue spawning im sure youll have plenty of opportunities down the road.

Do you have any guesses as to why the north south american cichlids espescially atros and ornatum are a bit harder to spawn vs the centrals like dovii that pump out fry like crazy? If i remember corectly your old umbees never spawned either?

I feel like a lot of the time the first spawn isn't successful due to the eggs being old. I know when I have gutted female fish i have caught that their ovaries have old almost shriveled eggs on top of eggs that look much healthier and until they have layer the older eggs they don't have a successful spawn. Just my two cents:) good luck in the future and keep the updates coming.

Well The female has come out of her cave and looking almost gaunt. She was so loaded with eggs the last time I saw her.
In any case there are no fry I am sorry to say. I believe they did spawn (or attempted to). The male either did not do his job
properly or the eggs (which I never did see so I can not confirm they existed except for the females drastic difference in appearance) developed
fungus. This is similar to what happened with my Festae the first time they spawned. Second time there was lots of fry. Perhaps the
Ornatums will follow a similar pattern....

This is what happened with my Heroina isonycterina pairs. I had two pairs lay eggs that were about 95% bad. The few surviving wrigglers were very weak and died off before they even managed to go free-swimming. Two weeks later they all spawned again with huge, fertile spawns in the hundreds. Now I have fry EVERYWHERE. Here's hoping you'll see something similar with the ornatum. I sometimes wonder if it boils down to the pair not being in sync the first time they try, and it ends up being more like a failed practice run. Hopefully it's something that simple.

Congrats on whatever happened...looked like spawning to me. It took my Peru oscars several times before I saw any wigglers....and they still never get past that point.

would have better chance if you didnt have all the others in there and do a water change.

Oh btw, it's Festae not Festii :)

Thanks for sharing big dog
