Hi Guys, so I got my hands on the shiny new Faranah Endi. Believe I am the first one to share it here. Ok, so I paid what I felt was a ridiculous price for an Endi to get my hands on this fellow and to be honest, I'm disappointed. It looks so much like a Tikinsso endi I'm not too sure what makes it different. Maybe the pros would like to take a shot at it. I just have to couple of rubbish pics because it's still faded. But just to give an idea. Will get better pics once he fully colours up.

I measured from the bag 18", but my LFS say he measured another pc that was the same size as mine in his tank and that guy was 20". So I would say he is 19" lol.

Nice pick up nid!

Though it's not a new collection point. Here in Japan they go by the name Endlicheri "Sankara" or "Niger" Endli.(not to be confused with nigerian)
As for the price you paid, sounds about right. they go for a lot more than other Endlis here, including other Guinea Endlies. (which is what Sankara is...)

There is also a regional Lapradei from the same place, also called Lapradei "Sankara" I believe user King-el used to own one.

I have heard of the "Niger" Endi before from one of your previous post, are you sure they are the same? From what I know "Faranah" is supposed to be a new collection point in Guinea. Did Toyin mentioned that the two are the same since I suppose he is the one who came up with the "Faranah" name.

As for "Sankara" Lap, I believe it is this lap. This is one of 2 I have, also collected from Guinea.

Faranah is not a made up name, but a region in Guinea.

I think that Sankara or Sankari (im not sure of the correct spelling) is another name for Faranah region in Africa.
Big-in have been selling Endlicheri caught in Sankara for years.

The reason one of the names in Japan being "Niger Endlicheri" is becouse the Niger river runs through the region, being the most common (but not only) place for catching the fish.

They often get sold off at the wrong prices here as some LFS mistake "Niger" for "Nigeria" on the stock sheets.
So "Sankara Endlicher" is used more often (as well as the Endlicheri being collected from other rivers and lakes in the Sankara region.

Very nice! I believe you are the first as well

This is what many bichirs hobbyist always expect that whenever a new collection or a different region is named, they expect that their will be a different looks (Patterns, headshape, base color etc etc). It's not always like that especially of the collection point is in the same country or close by neighboring region.

As mentioned by TGM, Yes I did had a Polypterus bichir lapradei from Sankarani river. Sankarani river is one of the tributaries of the Niger river which also flows to Guinea. We do not know if endli in Niger River travels or migrate as not many bichirs are being documented in the wild especially on what they do. So you never know if the bichirs that are caught in Guinea could also have sibling that travels to other tributaries. Then being caught in the certain place. Once caught in that area, we can just name after the area they were caught from as many of us bichirs keepers are so into this variation of regionals. This makes it more fun to collect more. To make it more easy but less fun, we can just call all of them in that area as Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri "Niger River".

here if u take a look at the map u will see that most are connected to each other.

Thanks King-eL, that post and especially that map cleared up a lot of questions i had about polypterus

Give me some credit man, yes I know Faranah is a collection point and not a made up name. Ok, so Sankarani = Faranah, but from the map, Faranah and Sankarani are different collection points quite far apart. Then if we go to Niger, Perhaps Toyin felt that Faranah is a collection point within the Niger basin and named it as such. I guess maybe it was just a matter of how importers are naming their stock. Bro TGM, do you have any old photos of a "Niger" endi? would be interesting to compare.

Hmmm.... yes, sadly I'm one of those who expect different new collection points to look different. After all, we do pay much higher prices for the little things that catch our fancy. At the end of the day, it's a strong marketing tool.

Well, but I have owned several different bichirs from the Guinea area and each collection point so far I have been able to see a difference in their locality. Which is why are looking that this big female for days, I think she looks just a Tikinsso which unfortunately is my least fav look, hence the disappointment. Perhaps it's the same case as the koliba and kolonton. I can't tell you how many ppl have mistaken my koliba for kolonton and vice-verse.
