How much money is "a lot"? they're nice looking.

When these are available (only rarely) you can expect them to retail around $180-250 (per pair). They're almost always sold as pairs. Like most wild bettas, they like slow moving, warm, tannin rich water. We use Indian Almond leaves in the water, it helps a lot. Not sure what breeding is like, anyone on here bred these before?

I read an aritcle about th fish in the TPH magazine many years ago. I recall that it is a mouthbrooder, but don't remmeber whether it is a paternal or bi parental mouth brooder. Labyrinth fish is the cichlid equivalent in Asia as they are equally intellegent, and have strong parental care for the youngs. In fact, African labrrinth fish, in particular, look like cichlids.

Mike...where does one buy Indian Almond leaves? LOL

Almond leaves are one of the best things I've ever used for keeping blackwater fish happy and healthy. I'm not sure if we were using them heavily when you were here Mo but we now keep them in all of our tanks housing wild S.A. knifefish, dwarf cichlids, S.E. Asian fish like this Betta and Badis Badis, and a bunch of others. Makes a world of difference in home aquariums too. I notice my fish coloring up significantly every time I throw a couple leaves in my tank. But anyways they're around- we sell them so any LFS that buys from us should be able to get them for fairly cheap. We actually go through so many that last year we planted about a dozen Indian Almond/Ketappa trees on the farm so eventually we'll be able to just harvest our own.

seems like there should be some f1's around for less expensive. unless they're really hard to breed & raise.
?
wonder if tank raised get that big, and what kind of lifespan they have.

sometimes I get regular betta females even though they're plain, instead of fancy males.

No idea on lifespan. I've had regular Bettas for years. IN fact...I had one that was in my office. He lived in a coffee cup for six years. ;) Talk about easy water changes!!
