Uhh, been married SO long, the "Surprise" thing went by the wayside long time ago.
It never worked for him anyway, because I have a strange sense of always knowing what he gets. it just runs through my mind right out of the blue & I have no control over it. One time he was so determined to surprise me, he bought me a hubcap & wrapped it all disguised, as to size & weight. I picked up the box & it popped in my head & out of my mouth '"You got me a hubcap" He was SO freaked.
One birthday he got me the best gift Ever. unfortunately, I knew weeks ahead of time. felt so bad for him, I faked ignorance and surprise. even drummed up some tears :-/ Just couldn't bear to see him disappointed.

We both have strict criteria regarding our interests, and they're quite different things.
It's best to just get That Thing which meets the need or desire. Sometimes now we just tell each other, then order it ourselves. There's nothing in this town, sooo..........
Even if we buy "for" each other, we do it like ecoli said.

You like hub caps...grandmas who like hubcaps scares me...

ROFL. You're kidding.(?)
If it makes you feel any better, I was not a granny then. We were young.
He was absolutely desperate to beat me at 'knowing' what his gift was. So he chose something that he said was impossible for me to ever guess.
Problem is, I don't "guess". it just hits my mind. That time it was when I touched the box. Other times, he might just walk into the house and BAM, I know. doesn't matter if it's birthday, christmas, or whatever...
ANYway, I really prefer the way we do it in now, it's so much easier.
BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE TO FAKE IT.
I summoned up tears & feigned shock about the most special gift EVER, by dwelling on how devastated he would be if he failed at "Surprise!" ing me.

I'm posting on behalf of all husbands, ...... given most gifts are tailor made to each person and their personality, but that doesn't mean we aren't open for some suggestions! .......
......
I am a firm believer in ASKING family what they'd like. if you want it to be 'kind of' a surprise, get a list of specifics and then choose from that.

IMO it's a bad idea to listen to what OTHER people say, unless it's a very close confidante of hers, and she would never tell you herself.
in which case, you'll end up splitting the sheets down the road anyway.
;-)
