770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There was a Rasbora Tornieri in the shop that I bought mine at that was easily 8" long. It's going to be a close call with them. This pic I found of one looks to be around 6" so at 8" they "might" be ok if my Oscar doesn't grow into a giant.

Nice looking fish I would keep them. I think heaters that are on 25% of the time seems reasonable to me. I appreciate all the good info here I have followed since the beginning.

Alex, sorry if I missed this earlier in the thread but did you ever find a way to do the Herbie drain setup? I saw your thread from last year on another forum. I have the same overflow setup (one bulkhead per box) in my 340 and I've been running Dursos. No seems to have an exact answer on this one.

Wowzer...that tank is stunning!!!!

Very nice monster tank bro!

Thanks for the kind words.

I think it's possible, but I didn't put much effort into trying...I'm still running dursos. I'll shoot you a PM with a link to a thread where some guys had some suggestions for how to do it with only one drain per overflow box. I think the main issue would be having an overflow box with stagnant water.

Your dursos aren't quiet enough for you?

Alex, thanks for the info. The dursos are ok but the tank is in my dining room. It's basically the only place we actually sit down and there's no tv or noise. I'm also trying to cut back on splashing, etc to limit CO2 loss. The tank's planted and I'm injecting CO2. The fewer times I have to hoist that 20# CO2 tank out of the basement the better!

A while back you mentioned going from an external to a submerged return pump. I'm thinking about doing the opposite. I'm wondering if that will lower my water temperature. I have about 400 gallons, including the sump. I have a Jaeger 300 watt in the main tank and a Hydor inline 250 watt on an Eheim I use to polish the sump. I don't really ever see either of them on. I do have about 650 watts of compact flourescents and a Mag 18 in the sump. We keep the house around 70* this time of year. The tank temp is always around 80*. The heaters are set at 78*. I imagine the lights are helping too but they're on only 8 hours a day and there's not a huge temp swing when they're off. If I swap out the Mag 18 for a Reeflo Blowhole 2700 are my heaters going to run nonstop?

I hear you...the last tank I had was in my living room and after I tore the tank down it was amazing how different it was to have silence.

I think the blowholes are water cooled so you will get a little heat into your water from the pumps, but probably not as much as from the Mag 18; I can't say for certain, but I don't think the difference will be huge...it really depends on how much heat the 2700 loses to the air, versus to the water.

I don't know whether or not my laguna pump adds much heat to my water...but now that things have started to cool down quite a bit, my heaters are coming on pretty often (My heaters have already used 75KWHrs and we're only half way through the month). I just turned my air pump off though and based on my experience from last winter, not pumping cold air into the tank reduces the time my heaters run by about 25%.

Is your garage heated or very well insulated? I would think that with your winters in PA that your sump in the garage would be acting like a chiller...I'm surprised to hear you are at 80F when your heaters are set to 78F...I guess having 650 watts shining down on your tank could do that.
