Can't hurt to try...well not you at least, perhaps the fish. It might help if you provide lots of oxygen via airstones. I find that fishes that live in cold water often require the higher oxygen associated with cold water more than actual the cold water itself. As for acclimation, I suggest keeping them in a container of the water you caught them in until the water matches that of the tank (I assume room temp). I've had the best luck doing that and the waters match by the time I wake up in the morning. Of course make sure you provide airation and all that to said container. Good luck, they're a really interesting fish that I too would love to try someday.

I think they will do fine, just worried about the initial shock from the high 30's to 70. Think Noto has a good idea.

Well, I know this thread is old but I thought I would mention something in regard to it. I looked into setting up a tank for a Northern pike but found out that it is actually Illegal to keep any Native caught species of animal from the state as a pet or live stock. Now Northern pike are invasive to the South Central region of Alaska but they are native to the northern part which made them Illegal for me to keep as a pet. Also it is actually VERY illegal in this state to transport any live fish from any lake because of the Northern pike outbreak. It really sucks too because we do have some pretty neat fish that would be fun to keep in an aquarium up here.

Start with some local water and make it super cold. Throw some ice or snow in it. No heaters and let it warm up gradually in a few days or a week.

Very cool looking fish, a native alaskan tank sounds really cool, were you considering of keeping these guys with anything else?

seems like you guys are encouraging him to break the law? hope I'm wrong.
