Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To the OP I don't know what kind mechanical pre-filter pads u using in the fx5 but I have not had mine clog once using fluval's pre-filter pads. Unless u have it placed wrong. All mech pre-filter pads should be placed on the top tray only.

Keep this on topic and stop the non sense.

I don't know a lot about the larger eheim b/c I don't own one. I do own a smaller one and pieces of it broke off (I ghetto rigged it so it still runs). It does an ok job, but its also a smaller filter meant for smaller tanks. Based owning a filter from them however, I would probably look into buying something else.

As for the fx5 - I do have one of those, it works fine - no issues, keeps the tank clean and has great flow and volume. It was not horribly expensive. I don;t like buying things for super expensive if there is something half way decent thats comparable. I think alot has to do with the ratings/reliability and cost. If its comparable to an extent and does the job then why pay a few hundred dollars more? I don't have money to throw around so I would rather go for something cheaper but still good quality. It also seems to be a favorite choice for a lot of people so its talked about more which gives it that popularity and then people want one to. However when I switch filters over I am going with a strong outside pump and 2 ocean clear canisters.

F1, 2262 has three times the media capacity...this does not translate into 10-15% increased performance.

Performance, bio media volume isnt necessarily based on performance. I'm talking overall, they have basically the same pump or gph, and if you use the 2262 on the same tank you use an fx5 in, you may exp 10-15% more performance, they did a test on here where a 2262 cycled a tank like 5 days faster. There's a limit to how much bb is going to colonize according to your bio load. Id rather not argue with one of my best buds on here but I've heard and said more then once 2262 is 10-15% better then an fx5, and for that amount of $$ difference unless I'm rich the obvious choice for me is the fx5.

Just saying bio capacity isn't really performance, I was more or less talking gph.

Eheim classics are great...I will also say that for the most part, I am also very happy with their professional 2 series, though they are a bit expensive.

Never tried their 2080, since for the same amount of money, you get a lot more of a filter in 2262. I work in electronics and will continue to avoid cheap ics in conjunction with reliable pumps...and that is a strike against fx5 and the newer eheims actually.

I like to point out that eheim 2262 at twice the cost of fx5 but has the triple capacity. And I don't remember the last oh no my eheim 2262 stopped working after a cleaning thread.

Triple the capacity is only true if you don't consider the foam blocks within the FX5 as media. The foam block account for 6 liters of media So about 12 liters versus 18L for the 2262. with a simple and low cost modification the FX5 will actually hold more media then the 2262 at far less the cost.

I too have never had any of my filters shut down afer a cleaning. As far as me and eheims go, well I've had bad luck with them as all three I owned were leakers, main O ring was the problem with all three. No O ring on the FX5 though.

s
Unmodified Fluval Fx5 Stats
Media Capacity: 5.9 Liters (im going to measure this since I think its wrong too..)
Mech capacity: 294 sq in; 369 cu in; 6 Liters
Measured Flow Rate: 525 GPH
Max Head Height: 3.3m (10.8ft)
Filtration Volume: 11.2 (Hagen says 20L. I call BS)

Modified Fluval Fx5 Stats.
Media Capacity: 12 - 14+ liters. (Depends on depth of mechanical filtration)
Mech Capacity: Est 108 sq in surface area. 325 cubic inches; 5.3 L (2" prefilter foam and 1" fine filter foam.)
Filtration Volume: 19.3L
Measured Flow Rate: ??

Yep I knew it. I bite my tongue, when I left work and moved from the east coast I moved up here for a reason, and getting away from rude people was one of them. I decided I was going to try and have a peaceful life. Our town is 100 miles from the nearest city as I have said so many times on here. I hate to have to stop a good conversation to deal with that type of thing? Back to the FX5 I'm interested in you people that run them along side Eheims in this range how to you think they compare honestly.

As I mentioned before I run a fx5 in conjunction to a eheim 2260 on each of my tanks. I think they are both great filters but in my mind do different jobs. Fx5 mechanical and eheim for bio. I think the eheim handles better head height and equal flow when packed with media, by I like how the fx5 seems to really pickup the big bits. The eheims are more expensive but like I said I think they are both great at what they do.
I also have a aqua one 2700 which is another great filter and sits more inthe budget filter range but I am impressed with its flow.
So I hope this helps your query a bit.

Is it ok to ask experiences on how different media alternatives can tweak performance of canisters? For instance, there are comments about how eheim is all about biological. so if a tank doesn't have 'that much' of a bio load, how about trading out some bio media for bags of SeaChem Purigen and/or Denitrate (or other brands) for polishing media? Pads can reduce flow, that's why I'm asking about this.
ALSO, curious as to any performance differences of different biomedia.
If the OP doesn't want this subject explored here, it's fine. Just nip it in the bud ;-)
To F1: I know about pothos! LOL
