Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First off please don't compare anything marineland to fluval and fx5. Marineland is **** IME. Shocked my fish, never will buy their products again.

Secondally bedrick is really my father and I love him dearly ;)
Joking aside he is a good guy who is brutally honest, that can be good at times, but to each his own, I respect the man.

Fx5 beats the hell out or any filter in that price range imo, 2262 is 10-15% better but for the price difference no thanks! My fx5 keeps my 125 squeky clean, combined with a LG sponge filter and 1450korila EVO and pothos, couldn't be happier! If I had unlimited resources id have that 2262.

Cheers

F1 I respect your opinion with the Marineland Brand...I know what it's like to have equipment go to crap.Take me with the FX5 I wouldn't want to give it up after I learned what the problem was and got it corrected. Thus far my 530 has not given me any reason not to trust it. It's only downside to me is that it is made in China my my experiance with products produced there has not been good. So with the 530 we will see down the road. It is huge holds a ton of media and moves some water. So I've spent the money I have the warranty so why not use them and see how it works out? If I start having issues the dump is up the road:). I'll tell you there was a day when Marineland was the ????.

See I don't think these two filters have ever been compared in any offical way? But would like to see it done with the upsurge of the Aquatop filters also. Though I think the GPH is lower on the Aquatop.

Is it ok to ask experiences on how different media alternatives can tweak performance of canisters? For instance, there are comments about how eheim is all about biological. so if a tank doesn't have 'that much' of a bio load, how about trading out some bio media for bags of SeaChem Purigen and/or Denitrate (or other brands) for polishing media? Pads can reduce flow, that's why I'm asking about this.
ALSO, curious as to any performance differences of different biomedia.
If the OP doesn't want this subject explored here, it's fine. Just nip it in the bud ;-)
To F1: I know about pothos! LOL

Absolutely, At this point I still have tons of Media questions. First dumb question what is Pothos? I've been using Purigen in some of my filters and like it so far. I just wonder how many times it truely can be regenerated if you follow all the instructions? With My FX5 I only have the most course Fluval Pad in the top tray. There is a Blue/White padding put out by Marineland (sure others put it out also) it's very cheap like $4.00 and makes about three of the Marineland polishing pads. This stuff is like a mixture of both course on one side and fine on the other works very well in the 406's and the Marinelands anyway.

Pothos is a wonderful thing, but please don't use it as media in your filter :)

I don't think you can really go wrong with any high end canister filter.I think it's all in the way it's setup and how you maintain it.I keep using Fluval products because as of yet they have not let me down and I am going to try out a Ehiem one of these days. There are alot of good posts in this thread and some should not take it to personal.

Imo their mostly junk, their lights aren't bad, Atleast that isn't in the water. I've heard the gph in the 530 is barely 300gph with media, fx5 is 500-600gph full with media, and has a micro chip that monitors impeller load/speed, heat, auto purges air, and it will auto shut down if something is off (jammed impeller, debris etc) thus saving the unit and it comes with media. Backflow is an ok features and so is self primmng start, as well as ease of cleaning! I took the dual outputs off mine and it seems to flow better, plus a lot of agitation!

and, from what I understand, polishing pads can reduce flow more noticeably in eheims than in fx5's. Thus, in one of my canister comparison question threads it was suggested that I get one of each type for my 180G tank- eheim 2262 for bio and fx5 for polishing.

How about some Cascade and Rena and Aquatop folks? Cascade I know almost nothing about. It seems folks love there Renas it sounds like they hold a good amount of media? I know the pricing is good. Are there any Aquatop folks out there that have also run the Marineland C's? Also last but not least the FX5 Vs 2080 study I know the 2262 is probably a stronger filter but the 2080 looks like a nice filter also? I guess I'm a filter nut I just find second to the fish it's a very interesting subject. I figure I need to understand canisters as well as sumps. I'm pretty sure my next tank is going to be a sump but I have a ways to go yet?

I have been told recently and read a few articles that surface area is just as important as GPH, so would not any of the larger Canisters compete?

The best way to reduce nitrate is to get rid of the stuff that produces it (poop, uneaten food, etc.) before it's broken down.

Terrestrial plants (like pothos) will consume ammonia and nitrite as well as nitrate (they actually prefer the former), but unless you're frequently cleaning the mechanical filtration components of your canister filters (FX5, Eheim, whatever) you're not doing yourself any favors with regard to nitrates.

Because they're a PITA to clean, few clean them frequently enough for them to not be hidden cyclinders of rotting food and shirt. Which is why this whole conversation is pointless. Canisters, as a category of filters, are far inferior to sumps / dumps...and I'd argue air-driven sponges and boxes. They cost a lot more too!

I only have one canister (an FX5 hooked to a dump) in my fishroom (of 50+ tanks) because I got it for free and it moves a lot of water. The rest are air-driven (coupled boxes and sponges), powerhead and small pump-driven dumps and a couple of HOBs.
