Still Don't Understand FX5 Mania?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Highly unlikely, although they are a very hearty ivy plant that can grow in very harsh conditions, my nitrates have been cut in half since and so have wc, to me that is worth it. I rely on plants, fx5 and sponge filter for filtration. Better to have more then one way, incase one fails.

And petspoiler, pothos "sticky" not thread :)

And hawk some people mod their fx5, putting bio on the sides where the sponges are, and using custom sponges in the middle, if u run a less dense sponge on top, and middle then use a finer one on the bottom you will have much better success and rarely have to clean them as much. We all know the stock polishing pads are a no go unless you are incredibly under stocked.

I don't think you can ever be understocked with Oscars. Mine han't hit the hormone stage yet so its a crap shoot to see if all three will get along after puberty:confused:. Then I have a few Parrot Cichlids and a old Raphael Catfish mostly sits there and waits for shrimp pellets thats about it (sorta like the old bloodhound on the Beverly Hillibillies), and a couple Synodontis catfish. Running three Fluvals and that 1 530. So I might bang on your door on how to load the FX5 the way you mentioned above....I'm very interested. I am thinking about maybe a sump if I can find a prebuilt one though I'd go way overkill because I think I want a 250 or 300 soon.

OK one more question for tonight and I'm done the dogs giving me that past bedtime look:). You know I guess the bottom line is that I am disabled so I do have a few physical limits. So I'm look for what is easiest to upkeep and though I'd love to Build a sump I'm not sure about that. So my question is will the sump be the way to go for someone in my case? And what will one that will do 250 to 300 gallons run prebuilt? Also will it fit under Aquarion 125 Standard stand?:grinno:

hawker, I don't know how to build ANYthing. I've googled online sump units. they are expensive, quite small compared to mfk DIYers make, and from what I've seen are not sold as "complete" functional units with all plumbing, pumps etc. which is what non-DIY dummies like myself NEED.
IMO, MFKers can use sumps prolifically because they know how to build fantastic capacities at very low cost, including workable dimensions for their cabinets.

It is big a disadvantage living in remote areas where there are no MFKers which we can go see how things are put together, and work firsthand. Lots of PPL here don't understand what that is like.
plus I'm female ;-)

Great question, Hawk. I am disabled too, as well as being an"old" man :( There are a ton of sump filtration plans available on here. Some simple, some not so..... I built mine and it wasn't that hard, but I did make some messy plumbing mistakes. The pump is what makes it expensive, because you can use a large rubbermaid tub for your main container. If you are serious, I can help walk you thru it when you are ready. If you try and buy a functioning premade one with pump, you will spend at least $400. From scratch, you could do it for 1/2 or less. Anyone running one would recommend it.Maintemance on them is cheap and simple. Also, you can put your heater in it to protect it from the tank busters.

I also have an FX5 running on both my tanks and I absolutely love them. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes...plain and simple.

I am thinking of getting a AC110 to pair with my FX5 on my 150 gallon tank. Does anyone here currently have this setup as their filtration system? If so how is the results. Thanks in advance.

I do sometime wish there was someone close bye, As I have mentioned many times it's 110 miles to Walmart (oneway) which for the most part its a once a month trip. I do have a Hardware store, Lumber Stores, and a small Department Store close by. Most of my tank shopping is all online. I am just trying to figure out the easiest way to get things done. My reason behind this thread was because the single FX5 and 2 406's where not cutting it. So I added back a 530 thinking that should do it and so far it's working except I was trying to stick with all like filters to make it easier to maintain. I'm just not sure I want to spend more on another FX5 just to say they are all uniform. The big downside is that the 530 when full with media and water is a beast to lift. For me maintaining these filters will be a major task, and I try to keep the tank spotless. I'm not stressed over it just trying to see if other options which make things easier are available. On the other side maybe I just don't have them configured correctly? Who Knows:nilly:

Here is a link to a wet/dry sump system, all you need to add is a pump. I don't particularly like wet/dry via bio balls but it looks pretty simple as long as you have the space for the hanging part(which I don't)

Are systems such as these going to outperform my canisters by allot? See I got the FX5 because I thought it was a super canister and replaced my 530 with it to start with but now I'm back to both?
