In the winter time my tanks get 40-50% every 10 days or so. Other than that, its 75% every week like clockwork.

I really need to get a drip going.

i've seen his tanks in person, looks pristine and fish look great but had no idea you were taking out that much water at once. oh well, to each their own. i think alot of people on this thread are searching for the pros and cons and not really getting many answers other then personal preference

Agreed.. chemistry should win out on this one. You can change more than needed and still be fine within reason, but whether it was needed or not is up to science I think.

You can do a 80% wc and not harm your fish if done correctly.

Match the exact temp of the tank water with the incoming water with a accurate IR thermometer

Then make a DIY carbon filter to go inline on your hose, half dose prime (put half in when you start and the other half when its 75% full) then fill it up!

I do 50% wc with this method, fish aren't stressed and they are absolute beauties! Low nitrates + good diet + space = healthy vibrant fish ;)

I know it can be done, question is why.

Oh and I read your pothos post and I dig the slick tire over the tank pic you just posted. lol.. A buddy of mine got a set of 4 used indy tires and made them all into different tables and decorations for his place. He just got married. I wonder how long his artwork will stay.

Haha that's awesome, that tire actually holds the hose in place upon refills.

I only do 50% 1x per week, before pothos I needed 2x that! If your crunched on time and have a high bio load then a 80% wc 1x per week may be what suits that person best!

And thanks bud I worked my butt off to make that a sticky :)

I don't mind so much taking the water out, it's the refilling part. The python thing is too slow to drain and too much hassle to set up for refilling. It doesn't fit the faucets in my house very well anyway. I do it the slow way, siphon and 5 gallon buckets.

To me, its all about clean, clean water. I have great filtration and 5-10 turnovers per hour in my tanks. I also powerfeed since 99% of my stock are juvie growouts. Fish thrive on clean water. I have well enough BB housed in my media so there is never a mini-cycle issue.

My fish love fresh water. They scour to the corners because of my python(s), but almost immediately after I pull the pythons out, they are swimming joyfully like they just won the lottery.

Imagine this, in the wild, fish have an infinite amount of turnover and clean beneficial water - constantly. And what you guys might even scoff at more is, once I get JK47's ass over to my place to setup my drip, it will be equivalent to DAILY 50% WC.

I use my garden hose to fill my tank in...

In the summer I can do 30-40% water changes at once, but in winter I have to reduce to about 25% before the temperature drops too low...I had no ill effects getting short periods of 72 degrees in my tank. No ich whatsoever. and I have clown loaches.

Jag14, pending the size of your tank, I would seriously consider buying a fx5(the eheim 2262 is a more serious investment) just to get the back flush port...That port on my eheim to me justifies all the cost ;) Imagine have a hose hooked up to the port to the outside and all you have to do is turn a nob to drain the tank...

Omg. Where does everyone get the time to do all these water changes?

+1

Im lucky to do it bi-weekly and I never had issues. I am the opposite of addictive when it comes to water changes.. I can list things I am addictive too though.. I wouldnt wanna break MFK rules.
