the mamalian and avian meat is in some fishes diet actually so it is no 100% true. aros will eat birds aswell as insects from the trees. i wouldnt suggest it as a staple but a treat it would be fine. at this point if the op has fed poultry to his fish for some time it will have developed the proper acids to digest and retain the nutriants. an example is if you took a deer from a conifer forest and fed it only corn no matter how much it ate it would starve. if you gradually introduced it and slowly made it a staple it would develop the ability to live on the corn. not a fish i know but it is possible and it is one quick example of what i am saying. large catfish like goonch, redtails, piraibas eat small mammals. most any pred will eat mice and small rodents. rbps eat cappibarras often. to say that they cant digest the protien would not be correct.

Thanks for the input, I wasn't very clear about the chicken, it's only a sort of treat food, maybe a small slither once a week, it's the same with most other meats, beef etc.

wrong, my friend. sorry. An wild aro eats a bird or a mouse once a year, if at all..

Check the Thread about Beefheart that is now on the moove on the site, and read it, pelase. See RD's post.

Thanks Miguel, what should I be feeding then?

Good quality Pellets, of course. Of the floating kind.

Have you tried? If so, has it picked it up and spit back out? ( if yes, it already recognizes it as food, and that would be a good sign )

But let it fast; let it digest the **** it has inside.

Then lets start with a couple of pellets. We will proceed from there

More pictures now the lights are on, sorry they are not the best, all my tanks reflect each other and the tv reflects on all of them.

main diet should consist of pellets, fish fillets, squid, scallops, salmon, octopus market shrimp/ prawn, just about any sea food. just make sure what sea food you get doesnt have any sodium benzoate or many presurvatives if any, fresh is the best way to go. i have a food vaccum sealer that keeps it fresh and i make "flat packs" that i can break off what i need without thawing the whole pack. that way i can buy in bulk and save, while maintaning freshness.

i will check it out, but i did not mean aros eat them all the time, they are hard to catch. large goonches are actually belived to eat human remains an that is why they get so large. all other predatory catfish will eat small mammals when ever availible. species like esox will eat ducks and small mammals. rbp do feed quite often on dead cappibarras. not tring to argue but it is fact they do this.

Al that kind of food has its uses, not as important as you think they are, BUT take a violent, absolutely non necessary, toll on water quality.

You don't need to feed any of that, nowadays.

Rodger that!

Tried most of that, he won't touch them

True because they have learned that the cremations which happens on the side of the river ends up in the river, the flames attract them.

Yanbbrox whats is your secret!? how do you keep it crystal clear!?
Low stocking, water changes and gravel vacuum waste every other day, plus a very good if not temperamental filter. A couple of pointers:

Gravel vacuum is only a quick once over not a deep vacuum, gravel plays a good role in the water parameters, lots of good stuff lives in there, if you over do it you'll crash the tank. It does need a good clean every other week but never over do it.

I don't use the ehiem fines filter pad, it's great stuff but clogs up in no time.

Always have a pleco. It sounds silly, but in this case a big one, they are the strangest fish as you hardly ever see them but they will keep your glass spotless, they produce a lot of waste hence the gravel vac. We lost our big oscar a few months back and that tank used to suffer from terrible brown algae on all of the stuff inside(the tank, just catches natural sunlight where it is). So when the new baby oscar went in after a month we put in two tiny L418s, now these you never see, if you looked at the tank you would never know they were there but... the tank has no algae problems now ;-)

I do enjoy a good healthy debate, no need to think this is derailing the thread, please continue.

Thanks for all the advise so far
