As read in introduction thread, I have a tank currently occupied by 1 rope eel, 1 pleco and a silver arowana. The silver's got to go, he'll probably be picked up by someone with a lot of carnivorous fish this weekend. He can give the fish a better home, and we're not to worry about our son getting bitten anymore. Allthough I will miss him :(

Now, a rope eel and a pleco. That's a pretty empty tank... I was thinking of getting some more rope eels, since they tend to get along with other rope eels quite well. The fish store, however, also has a polypterus delhezi.

Not having any experience with polypterus species, I'm worried we might end up with another agressive fish. Also, browsing the internet didn't give me that much information. Loads of websites were quite contradictive. So I have a couple of questions for you before I buy the fish in a rush and end up having to give it away again :(

How big does it get?

Is it generally agressive
- towards others of his own kind?
- towards other fish?
- towards humans (snapping fingers etc)?

Is it a good idea to put it with a couple of rope eels?

Are there any suggestions on other fish I can put in?

Any requirements on tank decoration? Plants? Hideouts?

It'll be housed in a 200 litre tank.

As the title said: to buy? or not to buy?

The delhezi bichir would max out at 14" and probably stay smaller and your tank is probably big enough for him. They are not aggressive but will eat anything they can fit in their mouths.

Bichirs in general tend to not be too active, but mine periodically swims around the tank to keep things interesting.

They seem to be alright without hideouts and if you put a cave or something in they will probably hide most of the time when food is not present.

Plecos and bichirs together may have issues. A lot of people report that a pleco will eat the slime coat off of a bichir which will make the fish sick and can lead to death. Some people keep plecos and bichirs together without issue. It will probably come down to the specific species of your pleco and how well you are feeding him.

Personally i would recommend a delhezi or any polypterus if you want an interesting fish. I would research your pleco a little more thoroughly before buying the delhezi though.

thanks for the information :) I don't think the pleco will be much of a problem, however, he's always hiding somewhere...

they are addictive. i now have 12.

get rid of the pleco! it will suck the slime off your bichir!
