TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Implying that an average-joe consumer is wasting his money on an edge-lit LED/LCD unless he spends $8k on a fully back-lit LED/LCD is just plain stupid. I've seen plenty of current Samsung LED/LCDs and the picture quality is fantastic. The average household will be more than satisfied. And they don't need to prove they have more money than sense by spending $8k on a tv :screwy:

Go back 2-5 years ago and yea plasma was best, but were in a different age. 8k on an led to match a plasma Lmao!

Check the reviews... Go to cnet.com will give you your answers that i am telling to guys. Plasma are still the best no matter what you say. It is an old technology but still unmatched.. Not saying led won't catch up but as of right now plasmas are still better.... I am talking about Panasonic plasmas or RUNCO plasmas... Not Samsung. Not LG. Not Sony. The reason most people buy Leds is because they are BRIGHT. At least that is everyone's initial reaction when they see it and that it saves energy.
But hold a plain white piece of paper near that screen when it is purely "white" and it will have blue in it. There are many more flaws.... Unless you calbriate an led it won't have true color.

If you watch sports led isn't your tv. Plasma has no motion blur on quick movements
Or sop opera effect.

I sure wouldn't trade my Panasonic plasma for a new LED.

Finally someone that agrees... Lol

Are you saying an LCD tv can't produce a true white color? This is false. All TVs should be calibrated for color accuracy. The LED backlight doesn't affect the color. That's determined by the RGB color filters in each pixel, just like a plasma TV uses RGB pixels to produce color.

Of course you oldies with plasmas are going to stick up for them cuz you already have them and when you bought them they were the best...... I have both lcd backlit and lcd led, led is better then the lcd, and as far as plasma my dads reflects light like crazy, and my led doesn't have blue white, white is solid white and there is no blur f1 looks insanely perfect....

Current 2.5k+ plasmas may be better then 500-1.5k led but the point of this thread is to lead the op to the best sense of "economical quality," led consume less power, last longer and are cheaper then plasma not to mention very thin and light, thus are the best option for him.

Plasma vs led in a color and contrast sence may be different, they may edge out the lcd displays with led backlit but is that worth reflection, shorter life span, less viewing angles, thick/weight and more money to operate.....?

Besides he already made his mind up, current market analysis points the avg consumer toward led.

FYI Sharp led elite was rated a 10 in picture quality as was your coveted Panasonic Tc plasma.

Cheers mates.

Didn't say they couldn't. Said it needed to be calibrated..

Same here.. I posted that in fact my in-laws have a new high end 60" and Its irritating to watch. Motion blur on lcds and the lack of true black bugs the eye when you are uses to something better, but clearly it doesnt bother everyone.

On a side note, I was at costco looking at tvs for fun and you cant even compare side by side. They(not sure all stores do this) dont put them all on the same cables. They may have the same source like a demo blue-ray or streaming but some are connected via hdmi cables, some are composite and some were coax. Dramatically different picture quality, but you can be sure all the expensive LCDs were on hdmi.. lol

the lack of true black

This is a complaint I've never really understood. I get that plasmas can produce a black black. But it just doesn't seem realistic to me. I like color accuracy and true-to-life displays. For me, plasma color and contrast seems overdone and cartoonish. Blacks are never that black in real life. Nothing is that black. An example, a night sky. On a plasma it just looks like pitch black empty space, but in reality, it doesn't look like that. That is why I prefer LCDs. Their display seems more realistic to me.

It's also the reason LCD displays is what's used when you need extremely high quality color accuracy and rendition. Photographers, printers, graphic designers, etc etc. They use LCD monitors that cost 5x than your average LCD tv! Ever wondered why that was?

Case in point, $2k for this 30" LCD monitor http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...01W_BK_MultiSync_PA301W_BK_30_Widescreen.html

and $2,900 for this 24" version http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...46A4_DreamColor_LP2480zx_24_Professional.html
