The Mossberg HS410 "Home Security", model #50359. Excelent for the job and perfect for a woman.

Hello; The corect self defense weapon should fit the experience and abilities of the intended user. In general if a person is not experienced I tend to suggest revolvers for their inherent safety and intuitive function. A revolver has no levers, slides or buttons to operate. They can lie in a ready state for years without any springs being compressed. If a round in a revolver mis-fires the operator has only to pull the trigger to fire the next round whereas a semi auto mis-fire can be difficult and time consuming to fix.
If the person is experienced there are a large number of semi auto pistole to choose from and by being experienced will likely have a preference and can indicate what they want.
Shotguns have strong recoil to add to the experienced/inexperienced considerations. They can much larger and not so easy to move around with inside a home. There are short barrel shotguns available that help them with being moved about as well as pistol grips to replace the buttstock.

Perhaps the more important consideration is that whatever choice is made for a self protection weapon is that the person be willing to practice and become competent with the weapon. Most any type of gun can be used if the person knows how it operates and has some substantial practice with it.
Good luck

My family has been talking about getting a female member of the family a gun for Christmas. Any advice? Thinking a shotgun or possibly a handgun.

For shotguns we are just looking at basic stuff, Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 590. Handguns something like a 1911 or glock.

Thanks.

Listen to skj was gonna say the same. Shotguns have heavy recoil n hard to fire second shot for a untrained person. Revolvers are perfect. Just point n pull trigger. Plus u will get less penetration n won't hit someone on other side of wall

If you really need a gun for home protection, a shotgun is the way to go. Most people are going to panic in that situation. Much easier to point a shotgun and pull the trigger. I would recommend a semi-automatic. Very little recoil.

Absolutely false.

Anything 1911. I love the 1911 look.

Being in the Military probably makes me biased, but I prefer assault rifles. Get an M4 or AR15.

The Mossberg and Remington are equals and both are good guns, no need to spend more on a just in case piece. I'd go with a 20g. The beauty of a pump action shotgun is that the sound of one being racked is easy to hear in a quiet home and an unquestionable sign its time to leave quickly. 1911s are very nice guns and their weight makes them very manageable with 45acp but your limited to a 10 round magazine and they're expensive. A quality 9mm or 40s&w from FN, Glock, Springfield, or s&w will give you 50% more capacity and save you a few hundred dollars. Revolvers are simpler and easy to operate but have very limited capacity, but still need training/practice and with the same practice you can become just as comfortable with a pistol.
