Best gun for home defense?

I have 2 mossberg 500s and the battle between the 500s and the 870s will go on forever between the Mossberg and Remington fans lol. The notion that a "revolver won't penetrate" is absolutely ridiculous. American pilots used to use 38spcl revolvers in WWII, Korea and Vietnam because they will punch through vehicles. One of the lowest penetrating pistol rounds is the 45acp and even that will go through numerous walls before it stops.
Does this lady have kids in the house? If so a shotgun loaded with "birdshot" is the way to go. That way it won't penetrate Sheetrock and hurt anybody but the intended target. If you live in a state where it's legal get the Taurus Judge(not legal in ca) and load it out with Winchester PDX rounds.
As stated previously, don't get something that she can't handle. She needs to practice with her gun and not just pick it up just to shoot a bad guy.

Hello; The corect self defense weapon should fit the experience and abilities of the intended user. In general if a person is not experienced I tend to suggest revolvers for their inherent safety and intuitive function. A revolver has no levers, slides or buttons to operate. They can lie in a ready state for years without any springs being compressed. If a round in a revolver mis-fires the operator has only to pull the trigger to fire the next round whereas a semi auto mis-fire can be difficult and time consuming to fix.
If the person is experienced there are a large number of semi auto pistole to choose from and by being experienced will likely have a preference and can indicate what they want.
Shotguns have strong recoil to add to the experienced/inexperienced considerations. They can much larger and not so easy to move around with inside a home. There are short barrel shotguns available that help them with being moved about as well as pistol grips to replace the buttstock.

Perhaps the more important consideration is that whatever choice is made for a self protection weapon is that the person be willing to practice and become competent with the weapon. Most any type of gun can be used if the person knows how it operates and has some substantial practice with it.
Good luck

+1 on everything here!

MTBjake beat me to it but I was going to throw out the Judge as well. They have the reliability of a revolver with the stopping power of a 410 or 45 whichever you prefer. I plan on getting one for my wife. I personally carry a glock 19 that has never jammed with thousands of shots of all brands. That reliability coupled with night sights and a couple 33 round mags is hard to beat. I have a 500 and 870 and would choose the 500 any day of the week. It never has jammed like my 870 and I prefer the positioning of the de-locking mechanism. I don’t have to readjust my grip like I do with my 870 should I need to which is helpful.

Pbass I have been wanting to outfit my G21 with night sights for some time now, where did you get yours and, which form is your Mossberg in?

Well if someone breaks in during the middle of the night and your still groggy and your visions blurry nothing beats a 12 gauge full of buckshot, not to mention when you load it that sound alone will have the intruder running for their life!

My G-26 is my personal defense weapon of choice, I have a pardner 20 gauge pump but the barrel is just too long for me too do a quick sweep of the house, I feel more comfortable with a small and light weapon when it comes to home defense.

I get them a nice box of hollow point ammo for home defense and obviously BUY A TRIGGER LOCK, EVERY GUN SHOULD HAVE ONE OR A SAFE.

I prefer to keep my guns loaded at all times. The notion of racking ur shotgun is some huge deterent is ludacris. What it does is gives you away. Many of the people who say this also say they CC because they dont want to give up the element of supprise. Mind=blown.

Birdshot is for the birds. Period. Its leaves a brutal wound but the wound is often superficial.

The statement of you dont have to aim as well with a shotgun is BS as well. Always be sure of your target, and what lies beyond.

And lastly if you choose to put on a trigger lock(my HD weapon does not and will not have one EVER) makes sure u can remove it fast and while half asleep.

I recall a heated debate about the effectiveness of the racking sound as a deterrent in a previous gun thread and I guess it would really depend on the caliber of the intruder..It might or might not scare him off but definitely WILL give up your location.I have not heard of very many accounts of intruders engaging in gun battles while inside of a victim's home...
