Not sure about the crooks you guys have but around me their young kids that are dope sick, hardly ever have guns and if they did I'm sure they would sell them for drugs.
After the tragic events this month why would you leave a gun loaded without a lock? Someone breaks in ur house and your not home you just gave them a usable loaded weapon not to mention friends, kids and visitors would have access to it...smart, not! Every gun should be locked or in a safe imo.

Because a lot can happen in the minute it takes to locate ammo, load (shotguns load slow), rack, find the key for trigger lock, fumble with that... Then hope the guy isn't in your kids bedroom by then. If you are going to keep a pistol for this application, a one gun safe in the night stand would be ideal. My shotgun stays loaded, unlocked, and semi hidden, though.

Hello; Thanks for the comment. I will point out that revolvers can be had with ammo that can penetrate walls and even more substantial barriers. I believe that some revolvers are among the most powerful handguns available; the 44 magnum and 454 caliber for example.
There are self defense rounds available for handguns advertised to have less penetration of structures like walls. I have some ammo called glasser safety rounds that are not supposed to penetrate some walls. This is an issue for consideration depending on what sort of place a person lives in.
A round needs to be able to penetrate heavy clothing to be efffective for self defense and such rounds are likely to be able to go thru many walls in a typical house. Self defense with a gun is a serious thing and has many aspects to consider.
