Best gun for home defense?

Not sure about the crooks you guys have but around me their young kids that are dope sick, hardly ever have guns and if they did I'm sure they would sell them for drugs.

After the tragic events this month why would you leave a gun loaded without a lock? Someone breaks in ur house and your not home you just gave them a usable loaded weapon not to mention friends, kids and visitors would have access to it...smart, not! Every gun should be locked or in a safe imo.

Because a lot can happen in the minute it takes to locate ammo, load (shotguns load slow), rack, find the key for trigger lock, fumble with that... Then hope the guy isn't in your kids bedroom by then. If you are going to keep a pistol for this application, a one gun safe in the night stand would be ideal. My shotgun stays loaded, unlocked, and semi hidden, though.

I 100% agree, just saying guns should have some security barrier to make access impossible for other people.

First I have a coded lock on my door:

Then a trigger lock:

And lastly a huge bolt lock so that way if someone does break in I have time to prepare my weapon before they gain access to my room:

This way there is no possible way to gain access to my room, and if you shut the door it auto locks behind after 2 seconds

Hello; Thanks for the comment. I will point out that revolvers can be had with ammo that can penetrate walls and even more substantial barriers. I believe that some revolvers are among the most powerful handguns available; the 44 magnum and 454 caliber for example.
There are self defense rounds available for handguns advertised to have less penetration of structures like walls. I have some ammo called glasser safety rounds that are not supposed to penetrate some walls. This is an issue for consideration depending on what sort of place a person lives in.
A round needs to be able to penetrate heavy clothing to be efffective for self defense and such rounds are likely to be able to go thru many walls in a typical house. Self defense with a gun is a serious thing and has many aspects to consider.

Sorry I should've added that they should get something like a .38 n hp rds

Personally I have a glock 19 15 rd law enforcement mag with one in chamber with subsonic hp rds. I know they won't go thru a wall n I keep them in a passcode safe next to my bed.

I got my wife a maverick 88 I picked up at walmart for less than $200... its made by mossberg, and might as well be called the mossberg 499 it has the same specs as a 500, and is so much a like most of the parts are interchangeable. Very few differences, example : trigger guard on 500 is made of a metal component where the 88 has a plastic trigger guard. You can google the other differences, but for a weapon thats only going to be shot for practice, and for the use of home defense I'd cheap it out with the maverick 88.

Got my wife the pistol grip mossberg 500. i work out of town and she wanted a gun. We also have 2 dogs. So that will give plenty of time to load a shotgun and barricade herself and the kid in the room. She is instructed to shoot and keep shooting if someone comes in our house. She wanted a handgun but theres a few more hoops to jump thru in canada for a handgun. Including belonging to a gun club. And more expensive to obtain. Went with mossberg because it was cheap and she can handle it
