AGGRESSION IN MY TANK... PLEASE HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think im gonna stick to the floaters then. easier to clean up after feeding anyways. would u suggest i sell the tats while hes learning? or do u think i could teach them too? cuz they sit near the bottom almost 100% of the time except when its dark and i have the lunar lights on it. also what are some suggestions for the expendable fish? just stuff like silver dollars and other large bodied fish? yours sounds like a monster of a fish :p

I like tinfoil barbs for teachers for my tigers. They share a similar body plan with an ATF and tend to school with ATF. If you look around, it shouldn't be too hard to find a LFS that has barbs that are about 3" that should be able to do OK with your Goliath.

I would say hang on to the tats unless the abuse gets so bad that it is in danger of getting killed. My tat normally just chills near the bottom of the tank and looks pretty too. He's not a very active fish. :/ Once pellets are in the tank, he normally catches the scent and dashes up to the top and grabs some. I have a video in the update thread that's linked in my signature that shows him eating.

Head on over to the Other Characins Section and share your fish! I'd love to see some pics! :D

haha i will tonight. the one tat has a nice bite on his back from the atf but its healing very quick. but my rents r makin me go to church... soo ill be back on here in a bit. and ill just steal 2 of the barbs from my girlfriends tank then. shes bored with them anyways so that works out good. and yes i have started gettin her into the monster fish craze. right now shes got discus, barbs, and rams but they get along great. shes startin to want rarer fish now tho so hopefully santa will help her with that :p

For your tats, tie a piece of fishing line to a piece of dead food (I started with talapia) and literaly go fishing (tie to a corner so the food falls off once the tat grabs it). Its been noted that payara species usualy prefere food from the surface. So toss'er in and dangle the food around infront of your tats, but slightly above them. Iv noticed my armatus only eats food that's literaly dropped ontop of his head, occasionaly he'll snatch some left overs off the bottom. Took me just under 2 weeks to fully break my armatus, iv never once given him a feeder and never plan too. Iv recommended this method to other members and have heard it worked for them too.

that sounds like a good idea. i have frozen silversides as well as talapia kickin around in my freezer so ill definitly try that. ill probably scoop out the gold fish floatin around in my tank tonight and try both methods tomorrow. im pretty sure ill need a tinfoil barb a bit larger then 3" but my gf has one pushin 4. should i use more then 1 tho so that they school? and is there anything wrong with using silversides? i know talapia is probably better for them.

Its always better to have at least three, otherwise the gatf will just pick on the one and end up killing it. If theres a few, it spreads the aggression around and will help to keep the gatf from killing anyone.

EDIT: I'll vouch for K's method of 'fishing' for payaras, too. I've used it to great effect as well. Payaras can be deathly stubborn at times.

ahh ur tellin me. ive had the payara for about 3 months and ive tried the entire time to get them eating anything other then rosy reds or guppies. they r too scared to eat small commets even. ive tried the entire time to get them to eat anything possible, hence why i have so much unused fish food kickin around on my shelf and freezer. i havnt done that fishing technique tho i will definitly try it and let you guys know how it goes. would i have better luck with a thin strip of talapia or would a silverside work better?

If it was up to me, I'd take a some tilapia and cut it to the size and shape of the feeder fish that your tats eat. Then take the thinnest piece of fishing line you can get and fish it with that.

i have that already. fishing is what im doing most of the time during the summer on my free time. i have 3lb flourocarbon so ill try that i just have never had them eat when they know i am there. i have to have all the lights off in the room except for the one on their tank and i need to be perfectly still. but the 3 sides of my tank r covered so i think i can maybe hide to the one side and hope for the best. how do those pink tails do? would they work good for teacher fish? or r they finicky eaters? cuz big als has them on sale and they r about 4" each. and i like their look better then tinfoil barbs anyways. plus they r only about 8 bucks each i think
