Asian cichlids..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There have been orange chromides in our lfs but i didn't buy them as i they can't live with my american cichlids. Their local name is Korali. But sellers avoid local name at selling as they think it can lessen the value and interest for them. Not expensive, basically all of cichlids are very cheap here. Price of pair of any juvenile cichlids is normally little less than one dollar.
We have black thilapias and mosambics also in our rivers.

I think the wild orange chromides look FAR better than those silly man made ones. I've found the wilds seem to do better in fresh, the man made better in brakish. No clue why.

And I have to agree with dogofwar, they are far more brutal to each other than you'd expect ouf of a cichlid that small.

In here (Sri Lanka),
Mozambique tilapia
Nile tilapia
Wami tilapia
Redbreast tilapia
Redbelly tilapia
but all of them are introduced species.

I maintain a colony of wild caught Etroplus maculatus and I've been keeping them in brackish water. I'm presently raising a spawn of about 200 fry. They are best kept (IME) in a species tank, with lots of refuges and areas for pairs to guard. Here's a video of a pair guarding fry.
